President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, has announced the passing of Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff, who died on Tuesday night in Lagos at the age of 56 after an illness.

The news of his passing was confirmed by President Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, in a statement released on Wednesday. The statement expressed deep regret over the loss of a “dedicated servant of the nation” who had served with distinction for over three decades.

A Distinguished Military Career

Lt. General Lagbaja’s distinguished career in the Nigerian Army began with his enrollment at the Nigerian Defence Academy in 1987. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Nigerian Infantry Corps on September 19, 1992, joining the 39th Regular Course. His tenure marked decades of dedicated service to Nigeria, defined by exemplary leadership and resilience.

Key Internal Security Operations

Throughout his service, Lt. General Lagbaja contributed significantly to key internal security operations. He served as platoon commander in the 93 Battalion and the 72 Special Forces Battalion, and played essential roles in operations that included Operation ZAKI in Benue State, Lafiya Dole in Borno, Operation Udoka in Southeast Nigeria, and Operation Forest Sanity in Kaduna and Niger States. His operational expertise and strategic vision helped shape Nigeria’s military response to numerous security challenges.

Academic Excellence and Leadership

In addition to his practical experience, Lt. General Lagbaja was committed to academic excellence. He earned a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College, cementing his reputation as a leader devoted to continuous professional development and strategic thinking.
