Importance of Pap Tests
A Pap test is a simple procedure that can help prevent cancer of the cervix. This test involves collecting cells from the cervix to be examined for any abnormalities that could indicate precancerous or cancerous changes.
The Canadian Cancer Society recommends that individuals with a cervix who are sexually active, schedule regular Pap testing by age 21. Regular Pap testing is crucial because it can identify cell changes before cancer develops, allowing for timely treatment and increasing the chances of a successful outcome.
What Happens After a Pap Test?
After a Pap test, most individuals receive normal results. However, approximately one in 10 individuals may have an abnormal result. This does not necessarily mean they have cancer, but it does require further investigation.
Clients with abnormal test results will receive a follow-up call from a healthcare provider to discuss next steps. These steps may include a repeat Pap test, a colposcopy (a procedure that allows for a closer examination of the cervix), or other diagnostic tests.
