James Walker, CEO of Nano Nuclear Energy, a company specializing in microreactors, highlights the inherent mobility of these systems as a key differentiator. "We wanted to confine the reactor to an ISO container system so that we could move it by road, by rail, or even with an ISO container and put it on the back of a shipping vessel and ship this thing anywhere in the world." This ability to easily transport and deploy microreactors opens up a wide range of possibilities for powering data centers, particularly those located in areas with limited grid infrastructure.

Addressing Data Center Energy Challenges

The energy demands of data centers are growing at an unprecedented rate. Companies like Google and Microsoft are consuming vast amounts of energy, comparable to entire countries. Nano Nuclear Energy's focus on commercially viable products for industry has led them to explore the potential of microreactors for data centers. "We thought this was a huge potential market that we could move into." Walker explains. "And since, obviously, we began down that road, the conversation around supplying nuclear power to energy centers, data centers, AI centers, tech hubs, even Bitcoin mining; that’s become an increasing portion of the conversation around the future of where a lot of this energy generation from the new small modular reactors and the micro reactors are coming from."

A Paradigm Shift in Nuclear Safety

Public perception of nuclear power often revolves around concerns about safety, stemming from past incidents like Chernobyl and Three Mile Island. However, microreactors present a fundamentally different approach to nuclear safety.

"The advantage when you shrink it right down to a microreactor level is that the risks and the mechanical issues that could give you issues with a large reactor system aren’t present with a small reactor." Walker emphasizes. "So with our reactors, for instance, if every mechanical component was to break within the reactor, then you can’t get this sort of overheating that causes the core melt that you got with something like Fukushima, you would just sort of passively radiate that heat out." This inherent safety feature, coupled with the advanced design and technology, makes microreactors a compelling option for powering critical infrastructure, including data centers.

While microreactors are still in the developmental stage, they hold significant promise for revolutionizing data center energy. The technology is rapidly advancing, with companies like Nano Nuclear Energy leading the charge. Walker anticipates commercial deployment of microreactors in the early 2030s, with small modular reactors, larger systems that can power entire data centers, expected to come online earlier in the decade.
