The return of college football season means the return of road closures, traffic and safety reminders from police in Norman. As the University of Oklahoma football team kicks off the 2024 season on Friday against Temple, the Norman Police Department released traffic information and tips that drivers need to know before the 6 p.m. kickoff.

Traffic & Parking Restrictions

Norman police will be assisting with traffic along Lindsey Street from Interstate 35 to Elm Avenue before and after the game. Officers will also be helping along all routes heading east from Oklahoma Memorial Stadium after the game.

Lindsey Street will be one-way for eastbound traffic pregame and westbound traffic postgame from Elm Avenue to Berry Road. Brooks Street will also be one-way for eastbound traffic postgame from Jenkins Avenue to Classen Boulevard.

Police said Jenkins Avenue will be one-way for northbound traffic from Brooks to Boyd streets.

Boyd Street will be closed to all traffic between University Boulevard and Jenkins Avenue. White Street, Buchanan Avenue and Asp Avenue near Campus Corner will be closed before and after the game.

These closures will begin four hours before the start of each home game, meaning 2 p.m. for Friday's kickoff. They will remain closed for several hours after the game ends. You can find a map showing Norman road closures on OU game days here.

Parking & Safety Precautions

Police said areas immediately around OU's campus and Campus Corner are barricaded in several locations, preventing or restricting all traffic and or parking. They say all parking next to the stadium is by permit only.

Parking is available on several private properties in Norman not far from Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, but police urge people to park in areas that have been proven to be trustworthy. They said they receive reports of people collecting money for parking on private property they do not own or lease.

Police also urge people not to block sidewalks.

Tailgating Tips & Reminders

For those planning to tailgate before the game, remember to be respectful of your surroundings and follow these safety tips:

  • Be mindful of noise levels and excessive drinking. The University of Oklahoma has strict policies regarding noise and alcohol consumption. Be sure to check the rules and regulations before setting up your tailgate.
  • Keep your area clean. Dispose of all trash properly and make sure to leave your tailgate area in good condition.
  • Be aware of your surroundings. There are always people around, so be mindful of your actions and make sure to keep your valuables safe.
  • Don't forget to check the weather forecast. Tailgating can be fun, but it can also be dangerous if you're not prepared for the weather conditions.

By following these safety guidelines, you can ensure that your tailgate experience is enjoyable for everyone.

Navigating the Crowds: A Guide for Game Day Success

Attending an OU football game is an exciting experience, but navigating the crowds can be a challenge. Here are some tips to help you avoid the stress and enjoy the game:

  • Plan your transportation in advance. With road closures and parking restrictions in place, it's essential to plan your transportation ahead of time. Consider using public transportation, ride-sharing services, or carpooling.
  • Arrive early. Avoid the last-minute rush by arriving early. This will give you ample time to find parking, make your way through the crowds, and enjoy the pregame festivities.
  • Be patient. With thousands of fans attending the game, expect delays and be patient. Remember, everyone is there to enjoy the game.
  • Be respectful of others. With so many people around, it's important to be mindful of others. Avoid pushing or shoving, and be respectful of personal space.
  • Stay hydrated. With the excitement and warm weather, it's easy to forget to drink water. Make sure to stay hydrated throughout the day by drinking plenty of water.

By following these tips, you can navigate the crowds, avoid the stress, and enjoy the game to the fullest. Go Sooners!
