We're about to get lots of rain here in Oxford County. Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning with the possibility of up to 50 milimetres of rain over the next 24 hours. It should start later today and continue into tomorrow morning, bringing the possibility of thunderstorms as well.

As of this morning, Environment Canada was predicting five milimetres of rain for today, about 30 to 40 milimetres for tonight, and another five milimetres for tomorrow. It says rain could also be quite heavy at times which could make it hard to see on the roads out there.

Weather Impact

The heavy rainfall could cause localized flooding and other weather-related issues. Residents are urged to stay informed about the latest weather updates and take necessary precautions.

Road Safety

The heavy rainfall may cause reduced visibility on the roads. Drivers are advised to exercise caution, reduce speed, and increase following distances.

Preparing for Rain

It is always a good idea to be prepared for heavy rain. Here are a few tips:

  • Secure loose objects outside: Heavy winds accompanying rain can blow objects around, causing damage. Secure anything that could be blown away, such as patio furniture, outdoor decorations, or trash cans.
  • Clear gutters and downspouts: Ensure that gutters and downspouts are clear of debris to prevent water from overflowing and backing up into your home.
  • Check your sump pump: If you have a sump pump, make sure it is working properly and has enough power to handle heavy rainfall.
  • Keep an emergency kit handy: Have a kit that includes a flashlight, batteries, bottled water, non-perishable food, and a first-aid kit.

Staying Informed

The best way to stay safe during heavy rain is to stay informed about the latest weather updates.

  • Monitor local news and weather reports: Listen to local radio stations or watch television news for the latest weather advisories.
  • Check the Environment Canada website: The Environment Canada website provides real-time weather information, including rainfall warnings, for all parts of Canada.
  • Sign up for weather alerts: Many municipalities and emergency management agencies offer alert systems that send notifications to your phone or email when weather events are imminent.

Staying Safe During Thunderstorms

Thunderstorms are a common occurrence during periods of heavy rain. Here are a few safety tips to keep in mind:

  • Seek shelter immediately: If you are outdoors and hear thunder, immediately seek shelter indoors or in a hard-top vehicle.
  • Avoid water: Do not use water appliances during a thunderstorm, such as showers, baths, or dishwashers.
  • Stay away from windows: Windows can be vulnerable to lightning strikes, so stay away from them during a thunderstorm.

Oxford County Community Update

The rainfall warning is just one of many updates coming out of Oxford County this week. Here are a few other notable developments:
