Pakistan's Anti-Narcotics Force Targets Drug Trafficking Targeting Students
Pakistan's Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) is engaged in an intensive crackdown on drug trafficking targeting students in educational institutions across the country, resulting in the arrest of six suspects and the seizure of over 15 kilograms of drugs. The operation, launched in September 2023, aims to combat drug abuse and trafficking in Pakistan.
Operations Across Pakistan
In the last 24 hours, authorities conducted five separate operations in various locations near educational institutions, leading to the arrest of six individuals. The ANF spokesperson stated that these operations have yielded significant results, with approximately 15 kilograms of drugs valued at over Rs 1.2 million seized.
The operations were carried out in different cities, including Islamabad, Lahore, and Hyderabad.
- Near Farash Town in Islamabad, 150 grams of hashish and 10 ecstasy pills were recovered from one suspect.
- In Lahore, near a university on Defence Road, 200 grams of hashish and 100 grams of ice were found on another suspect.
- At a college near Canal Road in Lahore, 2.4 kilograms of hashish, 100 grams of ice, and 50 ecstasy pills were seized.
- In Latifabad, Hyderabad, two suspects were found with 96 bottles of alcohol and 2 kilograms of hashish.
- Additionally, a raid in Tandojam, Hyderabad, near a university resulted in the recovery of 10 kilograms of hashish.
The Extent of the Drug Problem
The ANF's ongoing crackdown highlights the severity of the drug problem in Pakistan, particularly among young people. According to a 2019 report by the World Bank, 43 percent of young people in Pakistani educational institutions are using alcohol and other narcotics.
This alarming statistic underscores the urgent need for comprehensive strategies to address the root causes of drug abuse and to provide support services for those struggling with addiction. The government's commitment to tackling the drug problem at its source is evident in the ongoing nationwide operation.
ANF's Continued Commitment to Combating Drugs
The ANF's efforts to combat drug trafficking extend beyond targeting those selling drugs to students. In a separate operation, the ANF shut down a factory in Peshawar that was manufacturing pharmaceutical drugs and illicit narcotic tablets.
Authorities seized a significant amount of illicit drugs and chemicals, including 1,425 tablets, 2.5 kilograms of powder used in drug production, 120 grams of methamphetamine (ice), along with various other chemicals. The suspects were allegedly distributing drugs to students residing in hostels and educational institutions.
The Road Ahead
The ANF has stated that the ongoing operations are a testament to their commitment to creating a Pakistan free from the influence of narcotics. The authorities are determined to continue these operations until the drug problem is effectively addressed.
The ANF's proactive approach and commitment to tackling the drug trade are crucial in safeguarding the health and well-being of Pakistani youth. The success of these operations depends on collaboration between law enforcement agencies, community organizations, and parents to prevent drug use and provide support to those struggling with addiction.
This operation serves as a stark reminder of the need for continuous vigilance and comprehensive strategies to address the drug problem and protect the future generations of Pakistan.
