Patrick Mahomes expressed relief postgame following his ankle injury scare during the Kansas City Chiefs’ 30-24 overtime victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

“I kind of awkwardly rolled the ankle a little bit. I think it hurt more because it’s the same ankle I hurt last week, so it scared me a little bit. But once I took my breath and calmed down a little bit, it ended up not being too bad,” Mahomes told reporters postgame.

Mahomes had to be helped off the field by the team’s medical staff midway through the fourth quarter. The Chiefs star quarterback was injured when he made a shot-put style touchdown pass to running back Samaje Perine for a 7-yard touchdown. Mahomes took an awkward step and his left ankle appeared to give out on him as he planted to throw.

Perine caught the football in the end zone, but all the attention was on Mahomes as he stayed on the ground in obvious pain. The Chiefs franchise quarterback was eventually escorted off the field by the team’s medical staff.

Mahomes was tended to in the Chiefs' medical tent briefly, came out to workout his tender ankle and returned on Kansas City’s very next offensive series without ever missing a snap.

“Once the doctors checked it out and got back and did the drops again, (Andy Reid) let me get back out on the field,” Mahomes said.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid told reporters that he considered taking Mahomes out of the game before he was reassured the quarterback was alright.

“He might have the loosest ankles in America. I mean it’s ridiculous how he can come back from those things,” Reid said. “I told him I was gonna take him out and he probably wanted to fight me. He’s a tough kid.”

After a loud ovation when he returned to the field on the ensuing series, Mahomes orchestrated a 15-play, 78-yard go-ahead touchdown drive that put Kansas City up 24-17 with 4:17 remaining in the fourth quarter. The drive was capped off when Mahomes tossed a 5-yard touchdown pass to DeAndre Hopkins.

The Bucs were able to force overtime. But Mahomes led the Chiefs on a 10-play 70-yard game-winning touchdown drive in overtime to improve the club to 8-0.

Mahomes passed for 291 and three touchdowns in the overtime win. The Mahomes-led Chiefs are the sixth defending Super Bowl champion to start the regular season 8-0.

The Chiefs quarterback appeared on Kansas City’s Week 9 injury report with an ankle injury, but he was a full participant in practice. Mahomes famously battled through another ankle injury during the 2022 postseason as the team went on a Super Bowl run.

Mahomes conceded that his ankle will likely be sore this week as Kansas City tries to extend its undefeated streak in Week 10 versus the Denver Broncos.

“Obviously have a little swelling (Tuesday),” Mahomes said. “But on a short week, you go in there and take care of it and be prepared to play next week.”

Mahomes Shrugs Off Injury As Chiefs Win Again

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes shook off a late injury scare as his side won 30-24 in overtime against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to continue their unbeaten start to the season.

Mahomes threw for 291 yards and three touchdowns without an interception while running back Kareem Hunt claimed a two-yard game-winning touchdown to take the Chiefs, playing at home, to 8-0.

Mahomes, a three-time Super Bowl winner, had rolled his ankle in a win over the Las Vegas Raiders last week and was left limping again after escaping pressure to send a touchdown pass to Samaje Perine that pulled the Chiefs level at 17-17 early in the fourth quarter.

The 29-year-old needed help to get to the sideline, but after treatment he returned to hit DeAndre Hopkins with a five-yard touchdown pass that put the reigning Super Bowl champions 24-17 up with four minutes and 17 seconds remaining.

Tampa Bay responded when quarterback Baker Mayfield controlled the game, leading to a touchdown from Ryan Miller and when the Bucs opted not to go for a two-point conversion and the lead, the extra-point kick tied it at 24-24.

Kansas City's final drive in regulation failed to yield anything, but they got the ball to start overtime with Mahomes guiding them to the game-winning score as the Bucs suffered a fourth defeat in their past five games.

Mahomes Downplays Injury

Mahomes downplayed his ankle injury after the game, saying he expected to be ready when the Chiefs host the Denver Broncos on Sunday.

“You always fear the worst,” he said. “But as I got some time it started feeling better. We've got a short week, but we'll rehab it up and I'll be ready to go next week.”

Ankle Woes Continue

The injury was a scary sight for Chiefs fans, especially since Mahomes has a history of ankle issues. He suffered a high ankle sprain in the 2022 AFC Divisional Round against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Despite the pain, he went on to lead the Chiefs to a Super Bowl victory.

This time, the injury didn’t seem to be as severe. Mahomes was able to return to the game quickly and his performance didn’t suffer. But the Chiefs will be hoping that he can recover fully from the injury and avoid any further setbacks.

What's Next for the Chiefs?

The Chiefs will be looking to extend their winning streak to nine games this week against the Denver Broncos. The Broncos are currently 4-5 and will be looking to upset the Chiefs on their home turf. The game is sure to be a tough one, especially with the uncertainty surrounding Mahomes' ankle.

The Chiefs will need to be careful with their star quarterback. If he is not fully healthy, the team may be forced to rely on backup Carson Wentz. Wentz is a capable quarterback but he is not the same level of player as Mahomes.

The Chiefs will be hoping that Mahomes can make a full recovery in the next few days. If he can, they will be a formidable force in the AFC.

An 8-0 Start to the Season

Despite the injury scare, the Chiefs were able to extend their undefeated streak to 8-0. They are the only team in the NFL with a perfect record. This is a great start to the season, and it shows the potential of this Chiefs team.

The Chiefs are the favorites to win the AFC West and the AFC Championship. They will be looking to make another run to the Super Bowl, and a healthy Mahomes will be key to their success.

The Chiefs Are Undefeated

The Chiefs are a team that has everything it takes to make another run to the Super Bowl. They have a talented roster, a great coach, and a franchise quarterback who is willing to play through pain. They will be a force to be reckoned with in the playoffs.

But the Chiefs will need to stay healthy if they want to achieve their goals. The injury to Mahomes is a reminder that anything can happen in the NFL. It’s a long season, and the Chiefs will need to find a way to keep their star quarterback on the field.
