The former principal of a Perth private school who was charged with possessing child exploitation material has died ahead of his appearance in court.
Paul Whitehead, who was the principal of Bold Park Community School, was charged late last month after police searched his home and seized electronic devices, some of which police allege contained child exploitation material.
Police had said he committed the offences while he was principal, but students from his school were not depicted in the material.
His cause of death remains unclear, but WA Police said it was not being treated as suspicious.
Bold Park Community School acting principal Felicity Kinsella said the school extended its condolences Mr Whitehead's family and friends.
"Our Bold Park Community School spirit has always been resilient, and together, we will navigate this challenging period with care and unity," she said.
"As always, the safety and wellbeing of our children is our priority, and we will continue to ensure a nurturing environment here at our school."
Ms Kinsella said counselling would be available to the school community.
At the time of Mr Whitehead's arrest, the school issued a statement saying the charges had come as a shock.
"We understand that families, past and present, may be distressed by the situation and have many questions and concerns," the school wrote.
"We stand with everyone impacted by this situation and will do all we can to support and uphold the school's integrity."
Author and parenting specialist Maggie Dent, who is a patron of the school, also published a statement.
"I would say please do your best to protect your kids from any news coverage around this issue and, even though I have been told the charges do not relate to the school, it is a salient reminder that we do need to have awkward conversations with our children about body safety and protective behaviours," she wrote.
The Charges and the Death
He was charged with two counts: possessing child exploitation material and failing to obey an officer.
Whitehead was due to appear in court on Tuesday, September 17, but his lawyer informed the court that he had died the previous day. The circumstances surrounding his death are still unknown, but WA Police have confirmed that it is not being treated as suspicious.
