The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, Peter Obi, has urged the Federal Government to handle the allegations levelled against the president of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Joe Ajaero, with extreme caution.
Obi, while reacting to the police invitation to Ajaero, in a post via his official X handle, said the invite should not be unexpected given the sensitive position the NLC leader occupies.
He noted that the alleged infractions listed on the letter of invitation are “weighty, with no clarity on the circumstances.”
Obi also wondered if the authorities are attributing these allegations to personal conduct or responsibilities devolving on Mr Ajaejo as the leader of NLC.
The post reads in part: “The alleged infractions listed on the letter of invitation circulating on social media, are weighty and there is no clarity on the circumstances and if the authorities are attributing these to personal conduct or responsibilities devolving on Mr Ajaejo as the undisputed leader of NLC.
“Extreme caution must thus be exercised in the manner in which this issue is handled. It is not unexpected that government will try autocratic methods to vow labour as a potential opposition force.
“Invitations like the one to Ajaero are expected. But the rule of law and the laws of evidence should be observed. Labour should stick to its strengths and powers in order to maintain democratic order.”
The police had summoned Ajaero for questioning regarding accusations of terrorism financing, treason, cybercrime, and related offenses.
However, Ajaero’s lawyer, Femi Falana, replied in a letter to the police, stating that his client was unavailable and would instead appear on August 29, 2024, to respond to the allegations.
The NLC: A Key Interlocutor
Obi highlighted the significant role the NLC plays as an interlocutor for the Federal Government on various labor disputes and national interest issues. He emphasized that Ajaero’s position as NLC president, without prejudice to due process, represents an umbrella organization that should communicate its approach and modalities to the authorities.
The Need for Clarity and Caution
The former governor urged for clarity on whether the alleged infractions are linked to Ajaero’s personal conduct or his responsibilities as NLC leader.
He stressed the importance of exercising extreme caution in handling the situation, warning that the government might employ autocratic methods to view labour as a potential opposition force.
Maintaining Democratic Order and Sanity
Obi advised that invitations like the one to Ajaero are expected, but the rule of law and the laws of evidence should be strictly observed. He emphasized the need for labour to leverage its strengths and powers to maintain democratic order and sanity.
Obi’s statement highlights the delicate balance between upholding the rule of law and ensuring that labour rights are not compromised. The situation demands a measured approach to avoid escalating tensions between labour and government and ensure that the principles of due process and fairness are upheld.
A Call for Transparency and Accountability
Obi’s call for transparency and accountability in handling the allegations against Ajaero underscores the need for a thorough investigation based on evidence and due process.
The situation also highlights the importance of open communication between labour and the government to address concerns and find solutions that protect the interests of both parties.
The Way Forward: Upholding the Rule of Law
The government’s response to Obi’s concerns will be crucial in determining the course of events. Upholding the rule of law, transparency, and due process are essential for ensuring a fair and just outcome.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of dialogue and compromise in resolving conflicts between labour and government. It also underscores the need for a legal framework that protects the rights of both parties and promotes harmonious industrial relations.
The outcome of this situation will have significant implications for Nigeria’s industrial relations landscape. It will be closely watched by both labour and government, as well as by the broader public, who are invested in the future of the country’s economy and its democratic institutions.
