Emergency services are on the scene of a plane crash near Bacchus Marsh Airport in Melbourne's west. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday morning, has prompted an immediate response from authorities and sparked concerns for the safety of those on board the small aircraft.

Crash Site and Initial Response

The crash occurred at approximately 11:20 am on Aerodrome Road in Parwan, a location situated south-west of Melbourne. Rescue teams from various agencies, including Victoria Police, Ambulance Victoria, and the Country Fire Authority, swiftly converged on the crash site. The exact circumstances leading to the crash remain under investigation, with Victoria Police emphasizing that more information will be released when deemed appropriate.

Investigation and Early Findings

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) has launched a thorough investigation into the incident. The ATSB's initial statement indicated that the aircraft, a Cessna 150 light aircraft, encountered difficulties shortly after taking off from Bacchus Marsh Aerodrome. It descended and collided with terrain in a paddock adjacent to the airport. A team of investigators from various ATSB offices across Australia has been deployed to the site. The investigation will involve a comprehensive range of evidence-gathering activities, including a meticulous examination of the wreckage, meticulous site mapping using a drone, and the recovery of relevant aircraft components for detailed analysis. The ATSB is also seeking to interview witnesses and involved parties, collect flight tracking data, obtain pilot and weather information, and review aircraft maintenance records.

Local Impact and Response

The Bacchus Marsh Aerodrome, owned and operated by Moorabool Shire Council, is known for its flying school and gliding clubs. The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community. Moorabool Shire Council CEO Derek Madden expressed his concern, stating, "We are aware of the awful situation at the aerodrome. While investigations are continuing, we can't make any further comment, but our thoughts are with all involved." Access to the aerodrome has been restricted, with police closing Aerodrome Road and Skylark Way to facilitate investigations.

A Recent Trend

The incident marks the second aircraft crash in Victoria within a span of six weeks. In September, a fatal crash occurred on Coliban Park Road in Redesdale, claiming the life of the pilot. This recent string of accidents has understandably raised safety concerns and prompted authorities to conduct thorough investigations to determine the underlying causes.

Awaiting Further Updates

As of now, information regarding potential injuries or the number of individuals on board the aircraft remains unclear. The investigation is ongoing, and further updates will be provided as they become available.
