The National Ploughing Championships, a spectacle that attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors every year, is underway in Ratheniska, Co. Laois. This year, Gardaí are taking a proactive approach to ensuring the smooth flow of traffic and the safety of attendees.
Gardaí have implemented a comprehensive traffic plan, which includes color-coded routes to guide attendees from all corners of the country. The plan, featuring Green, Blue, Purple, Yellow, Grey, and Brown routes, is designed to minimize congestion and maximize the safety of drivers and pedestrians. The plan highlights the importance of attendees adhering to the designated routes, as they will be directed by signs, Gardaí, and stewards.
Sergeant Graham Kavanagh, the Laois Offaly Garda Crime Prevention Officer, emphasized the significance of following the guidance provided by Gardaí, urging attendees to refrain from relying on their sat navs.
“Go to where you are sent to rather than where you think you need to go…Be patient with us,” Kavanagh advised, stressing the importance of avoiding traffic volumes in local towns and villages where residents need to go about their daily business.
Despite the large crowds anticipated, Gardaí are working closely with local communities to minimize traffic disruption. The impact of the Ploughing Championships on local traffic flow is a concern, with Sergeant Kavanagh acknowledging the challenges presented by the event’s popularity.
“We are conscious that there is heavy traffic volumes over the three days and we work with residents in the area but there are times when routes are curtailed,” he explained.
The event attracts a large crowd, and Gardaí are encouraging attendees to be vigilant about their personal security. Sergeant Kavanagh highlighted the potential for theft, urging visitors to avoid leaving valuables in their vehicles and to ensure they lock their cars.
“Do not keep anything valuable in your car which you should lock and secure and know where it is,” he said, emphasizing the importance of being aware of one’s surroundings and taking precautions against pickpockets.
Gardaí are also advising workers at the event to be cautious about leaving valuable equipment unsecured in tents overnight.
With alcohol being served at the Ploughing Championships, Gardaí are committed to maintaining order and ensuring the safety of all attendees. Sergeant Kavanagh encouraged attendees to enjoy themselves but to avoid excessive alcohol consumption.
“If you are going to the event, enjoy it but don’t overconsume alcohol,” he said, reminding attendees that Gardaí are present to ensure everyone’s safety and wellbeing.
For those attending with children, Gardaí recommend using the wristbands available at the event to help reunite children with their parents or guardians quickly if they get lost.
Furthermore, Gardaí have a dedicated stand at the event, and the traffic plan is accessible on the Garda website.
