Prime Video is releasing its take on the infamous BBC ‘Newsnight’ interview that changed the lives of both of its key players, Prince Andrew and Emily Maitlis. The three-episode series, out Sept. 19, sees Michael Sheen take on the role of Prince Andrew and Ruth Wilson play journalist Emily Maitlis in the latest dramatization of the disastrous BBC Newsnight interview in November 2019 that ended the Duke of York’s public role in the British royal family. A Very Royal Scandal follows both the royal and the renowned broadcaster in the leadup to the interview, the groundbreaking event itself and the fallout in the aftermath of it that changed both Prince Andrew and Maitlis’ lives.
The trailer shows both Prince Andrew and Maitlis in preparation for the interview, which the Duke of York apparently called off before reconsidering. "Get me and him in a room together, and then I can do my thing," the character of Maitlis says in the trailer.
A pre-interview exchange between the two key players, Prince Andrew and Maitlis, shows the royal telling the longtime journalist "I've been warned about you," the character of Prince Andrew says in a voiceover. "You have a bit of a reputation." Maitlis then cheekily responds, while sitting across from him, "Well, for you, I'll try and behave."
Before the interview, the Duke of York asserts "I'm going to blow this out of the water." The trailer then shows the actual interview and then its aftermath, during which Maitlis says "I was only ever hoping to ask the right questions."
The show’s first episode sees Prince Andrew attempt to declare his innocence as he finds himself at the center of a scandal surrounding his association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, as well as allegations of sexual assault from Virginia Guiffre, who accused the prince of having sex with her when she was 17 years old. The first episode sees Maitlis doing everything in her power to secure an exclusive interview with Prince Andrew.
In the second episode, Maitlis runs into obstacles while attempting to land the interview, but, after much anticipation, the conversation goes forward. But, according to Prime Video, “the meeting takes various twists and turns that neither Emily nor the Newsnight team could have expected.”
Finally, in the series finale, the shockwaves from the infamous moment in television history are felt by Prince Andrew, his family and the institution of the monarchy. Maitlis, too, has much to consider, particularly when it comes to the future of her career and her reputation.
Maitlis served as an executive producer on A Very Royal Scandal, and the series tells the story in depth from her perspective, as well as the embattled royal.
Prince Andrew was heavily criticized for defending his friendship with pedophile Epstein, as well as his failure to mention Epstein’s victims during the interview. Soon after the Newsnight interview aired, the Duke of York announced he was stepping back from public duties, and in January 2022, Queen Elizabeth stripped him of his military titles and patronages amid Guiffre’s civil sexual assault lawsuit that has since been settled. Prince Andrew has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.
A Very Royal Scandal is the second time this year that Prince Andrew’s Newsnight interview has made it on screen. In April, Netflix’s film Scoop was released, with Rufus Sewell playing Prince Andrew and Gillian Anderson portraying Maitlis.
Prince Andrew is reportedly excited to see a portrayal of himself on the big screen. The Duke of York’s life story is to be played by actor Micheal Sheen in the upcoming Amazon MGM Studios. The series revolves around Andrew’s infamous BBC Newsnight interview with Emily Maitlis.
"Andrew was very excited when Scoop came out and he's also looking forward to seeing how he's been portrayed in the new one [A Very Royal Scandal]," said a source. "He's planning to watch it like everyone else with a mini viewing party [at Royal Lodge]."
The news comes amid the Duke remembering his mother today in prayer and reflection with his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson.
The mini-series centers around Prince Andrew and the scandal that rocked the royal family. Amazon Prime Video just released the trailer for their upcoming series, A Very Royal Scandal, based on a 2019 interview between Prince Andrew and BBC journalist Emily Maitlis.
The three-part series centers around the interview that shocked the world, the lead-up to it and the aftermath.
During the interview, Prince Andrew addressed the accusations he faced around his involvement with Jeffrey Epstein and Virginia Giuffre, who accused the Duke of York of having sex with her when she was 17, which he as always denied.
The scandal rocked the British monarchy like never before. Many people credit the interview with ending the Duke of York’s public role in the British royal family. Three years later, in 2022, Queen Elizabeth stripped him of his military titles and patronages amid Guiffre’s civil sexual assault lawsuit that has since been settled. Prince Andrew has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.
Emily Maitlis served as an executive producer on A Very Royal Scandal, and the story is told as much from her perspective as from the Prince’s.
British actors Michael Sheen and Ruth Wilson star as Prince Andrew and Emily Maitlis in the series. Other notable royal figures are also depicted in the series including Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie.
Members of Prime Video will have access to the mini-series on September 19.
Prince Andrew has been spotted out on the Windsor estate this morning riding a horse after returning from the royals' annual Balmoral break with the feud over his Royal Lodge home continuing.
A glum-looking Prince Andrew has been spotted as the row over his Royal Lodge home rumbles on. The Duke of York was seen riding a horse with a companion in Windsor Great Park today just days after returning back to his home following the royals' annual Balmoral break. He failed to crack a smile as he completed his ride wearing a burgundy jumper and was also seen driving a Range Rover back to his home.
His appearance comes just weeks after it was reported he could finally be forced to leave his Windsor home by October as his private security has been axed.
It was reported that King Charles had decided to lay off the property's 10-man team to put more pressure on the Duke of York to leave the home. Charles has been funding private guards at the Windsor property ever since Andrew's armed cops were removed in 2022. Hehas lived at the 31-room property in 98 acres of grounds on the Windsor estate, for more than 20 years after signing a 75-year lease. He is based there with his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson, and his friends say that due to his lease, he has no reason to give up the residence.
But he may soon be forced to leave the house with Charles reportedly telling the security team they are no longer needed at the lodge once their contract ends in the autumn. A Palace insider weighed in on the issue saying that "it isn’t a secret that the King wants him out" after reports that the Duke of York has become a "bit of a recluse".
The insider told The Sun: "Everyone is speculating this means the Duke will have to leave the Royal Lodge because what other reason could there be to take his security away? They are all working the final weeks of their contract till the end of October. It’s not thought anyone is being lined up to replace them."
Andrew is understood to have told the King that he intends to 'see out' the 55 years left on a lease he signed at the £30million mansion two decades ago, despite being encouraged to move into the nearby Frogmore Cottage, which is currently vacant after being home to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
With no royal duties to perform since being stripped of his honorary titles and patronages in 2022, the 64-year-old Duke is now reported to be occupying his time with a few select hobbies, including horse riding around Windsor Castle mews and playing golf. But one more recent hobby - watching live plane traffic from around the world on a projector screen - is a little more unusual.
Royal correspondent Richard Kay wrote in the Daily Mail: "The one-time helicopter pilot - commended for his bravery in the Falklands War flying decoy missions to draw Argentine missiles away from the ships of the British task force - is able to watch flights landing and taking off at airports all over the globe. According to a visitor to Royal Lodge, the prince has become obsessed with the app beloved of planespotter nerds."
Andrew faces mounting costs in his efforts to try and stay put at Royal Lodge, and he has also been forced to meet the upkeep costs of the 19th-century Grade II listed house, including a recent bill of £200,000 for roof repairs.
