Rangers return to Premiership action when they travel north to Tannadice on Sunday. Philippe Clement's men face a Dundee United side in good form with the Tangerines sitting above the Ibrox club in the table. After a miserable Old Firm defeat a fortnight ago, will the Belgian ring the changes?
Our writers select their starting XIs for the match.
Philippe Clement's Injury Woes
Philippe Clement has problems to solve and big calls to make. The most significant one of all revolves around his captain. Now was not the time for James Tavernier to leave Rangers, but it is the time for him to be taken out of the team. On form, he doesn’t merit a start on Sunday. If he does play, the allegation will be that it is his status as skipper that is keeping him on the pitch.
Clement has issues on the other side as well. Oscar Cortes is making good progress on the road to recovery but The loss of Rabbi Matondo and Ross McCausland’s knock is a blow. Moving Jefte further forward allows Clement to keep natural width on that side, and it would be a show of faith in Robbie Fraser if he were to come in at left-back.
At No.10, Clement must be brave with Nedim Bajrami. His time on the training ground has been limited but on a day when Rangers need a result and a performance Clement cannot afford to be conservative with his £3.5million midfielder.
Dundee United's Tactical Tweak
Dundee Utd 0-1 Rangers
It looks like United have also changed their shape. A back four now with Luca Stephenson pushing up more as a right winger. The tweak worked, it’s got them further up the pitch. They’ve taken one of the 10s and put him in midfield and it’s matched up - it’s let Luca Stephenson get higher and Trapanovski on the other side get higher, so when they get possession they can get it up to Van der Sande.
Rangers' Form and Expectations
The manager has some selection dilemmas heading into what is a crucial game. Given the poor showing against Celtic, the supporters need to see a reaction against Jim Goodwin's men.
With that in mind, Philippe Clement has to be ruthless with players who are underperforming. The captain is someone who falls into this category. Armband or not, he doesn't deserve to be starting at this moment in time. He needs benched and the most likely replacement will surely be Dujon Sterling.
Another key decision is at centre-back. Robin Propper and John Souttar is a partnership that looks ropey. With Leon Balogun and Neraysho Kasanwirjo in reserve, both should be looking over their shoulder. The experienced Balogun is someone you want in games like this. Of the two, Propper probably provides more balance on the left with Balogun taking Souttar's position on the right.
With Rabbi Matondo out of action for the foreseeable, a space opens up for someone else on left-wing. Rangers have plenty of options out there with deadline-day singing Nedim Bajrami, Hamza Igamane and the returning Oscar Cortes all viable solutions. However, Jefte represents a solid replacement with Robbie Fraser being granted an opportunity at left-back.
Bajrami simply has to start in the No.10 position despite the lack of training sessions while a big call in the middle would be Nico Raskin for Mohamed Diomande who has suffered a dip in form of late.
Injury Report and Predicted Lineups
Dundee United will be without Ryan Strain (hamstring), but they otherwise have a fully-fit squad to pick from for the visit of Rangers.
Glenn Middleton could be pushing for a start on the left flank if the manager opts to rotate Will Ferry, with captain Ross Docherty also hoping to start in the midfield alongside Craig Sibbald to provide extra security in the centre of the park.
It is bad news for Clement with regard to Welsh winger Matondo, who is expected to be out for up to two months with the hamstring injury he sustained against Celtic.
There are also some other injury doubts for Rangers heading into this game, with question marks over Danilo (knee) and Ridvan Yilmaz (hamstring), but Nicolas Raskin could be pushing for a start having appeared from the bench last time out.
Dundee United possible starting lineup:Walton; Holt, Gallagher, Graham; Stephenson, Docherty, Sibbald, Ferry; Babunski, Trapanovski; Van der Sande
Rangers possible starting lineup:Butland; Tavernier, Souttar, Balogun, Jefte; Sterling, Barron; Cerny, Lawrence, Cortes; Dessers
Can Rangers Bounce Back?
Dundee United are unbeaten in all competitions so far this season, and with home advantage on their side they can feel confident in their chances of taking all three points against Rangers on Sunday. The visitors' form is too up and down to predict a win right now, and with the injury news of Matondo, this lack of pace on the flank could hurt Rangers against a side that have not conceded a goal in their last three games.
