Real Madrid will conclude its thus far unsuccessful preseason tour of the United States with a meeting against Chelsea at the Bank Of America Stadium in Charlotte on Tuesday evening.
Success is measured depending on how you look at the tour, however.
Granted Madrid is winless in two outings after losses to AC Milan and FC Barcelona last week, but head coach Carlo Ancelotti - who warned the football world not to “go crazy” on Saturday - is using the games for motives that he explained after the loss to the Catalans at the MetLife Stadium.
“Let’s not go crazy. They are preseason games, we are missing eight players...,” the Italian said in a post-match conference after El Clasico. “The result is not as important for us as getting the players in good shape.”
“The objective now is to give minutes and get the players who return in shape,” he added.
“We are not thinking about the tactical issue or other things, just putting the players who are working now in a good condition. On a tactical level we will work from the 7th [of August].”
That is the date when the missing players - including Jude Bellingham, who Ancelotti revealed he was angry with for not answering his telephone call - also return to training in Valdebebas.
Until then, though, Madrid has a final preseason friendly before its UEFA Super Cup final meeting with Atalanta on the 14th, in which Ancelotti has already explained that he believes his Champions League winning players should star.
In the same talk with the media where he stated this belief, Ancelotti asked for calm with new signing Endrick, who was off key against Barca and came in for criticism.
Despite having said as much, though, he will drop the youngster for his compatriot Vinicius, who will form a front three with Rodrygo and Brahim Diaz.
Apart from that, the defence and midfield are identical to that which played against Barca in East Rutherford.
Thibaut Courtois starts in goal, and is protected by an Eder Militao and Antonio Rudiger who allowed Barca’s Pau Victor to get between them for his second goal, plus Fran Garcia and Lucas Vazquez at left back and right back.
Turning 39 next month, captain Luka Modric played the whole 90 minutes against the Blaugrana and will lead the midfield once more.
He is joined by Mario Martin and Dani Ceballos, though we should expect Madrid’s goalscorer in the 2-1 Clasico loss - Nico Paz - to feature at some point as well as Arda Guler.
Real Madrid: Courtois; Lucas Vázquez, Militao, Rudiger, Fran Garcia; Modric, Mario Martin, Ceballos; Rodrygo, Vinicius, Brahim
