Saoirse Ronan, the four-time Oscar-nominated actress, recently made an appearance on RTÉ’s The Late Late Show where she talked about her new film, The Outrun, and her working relationship with her husband, Jack Lowden, who she secretly married in Edinburgh this past summer. The couple, who first met on the set of Mary Queen of Scots in 2018, have teamed up to produce The Outrun, based on the memoir of the same name by Amy Liptrot.

Ronan described the experience of working with her husband as “great,” emphasizing their shared dedication to excellence and her profound trust in his judgment. “[When] you have a personal relationship with someone, and you’re also in the same field, and you respect one another, and you’ve got the same taste, and you expect the best from yourself, to have that other person there believing in you but also pushing you is great,” she explained to host Patrick Kielty. “He was my eyes and ears, really, when he was on set. He was able to keep an eye on what I was doing because so much of it was improv. To have Jack there, to just go, ‘you’re going down the right path’ or ‘don’t do that’ was great because I just completely trust him.”

Ronan went on to share a humorous anecdote about Lowden’s feedback on her attempt at a Scottish accent for the film, revealing that her husband, despite his own Scottish background, thought her initial attempt was a bit off the mark. The Orcadian accent, as she described it, is “almost like a Geordie Nordic accent, it’s mad.” She had initially worked with a dialect coach and felt confident about her progress. However, Lowden, upon hearing her practice, offered his honest critique. “He was like, ‘You’re not doing that, are you? Is that what you’re going to do?’” Ronan recalled, laughing. “It’s very difficult to nail that accent and Amy Liptrot doesn’t sound like that, she’s got kind of an English Scottish Orcadian accent so I mixed it all together and that’s we got.”

The Outrun tells the story of a young woman who returns to her hometown in the Orkney Islands after struggling with alcoholism. Ronan’s portrayal of the character has been met with critical acclaim, with many reviewers noting her raw and vulnerable performance. The film has also been praised for its beautiful cinematography and its exploration of themes of addiction, recovery, and self-discovery.

The couple's collaborative effort on The Outrun is a testament to their shared passion for filmmaking and their unwavering support for each other’s creative endeavors. Their ability to navigate the complex world of show business while maintaining a strong personal relationship serves as inspiration for many.
