A Thrilling Ride Awaits: Scotland's First Alpine Coaster Opens at Midlothian Snowsports Centre

Midlothian Snowsports Centre is set to unveil its latest attraction, the Alpine Coaster, to the public on Saturday, September 14. Starting from 9 a.m. on Wednesday, September 11, visitors can book tickets for this exhilarating ride, which can reach speeds of up to 28 miles per hour.

The Alpine Coaster, the longest of its kind in the UK, marks the completion of ‘Phase I’ of the Destination Hillend project, an initiative aimed at transforming Midlothian Snowsports Centre into a year-round, family-friendly, multi-activity leisure destination. This project has transformed the snowsports centre into a vibrant leisure hub, attracting visitors from all over. Phase I involved the construction of a new freestyle slope, a new junction on the A702, expanded car parking, and the widening of the centre's access road to accommodate public transport drop-offs.

An Exciting New Attraction: A Glimpse into the Alpine Coaster Experience

Alpine coasters, popular in Europe’s mountainous regions, offer riders an exciting experience as they descend in toboggan-like carts along a winding track, combining high-speed thrills with scenic views. They are commonly found at ski resorts to provide a year-round attraction. The Alpine Coaster at Midlothian Snowsports Centre promises a similar experience, allowing riders to feel the adrenaline rush as they glide down the track, enjoying breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside.

The Future of Hillend: Phase II of the Destination Hillend Project

Details of Phase II are still being finalised, but preliminary plans include a new reception building, retail space, and indoor activity areas. The project aims to further enhance the centre's appeal and make it a national tourist attraction. This ambitious project is expected to attract over 150,000 visitors annually, boosting local employment opportunities and contributing significantly to the local economy.

A Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony and a Test Ride: Council Leader's Enthusiasm

Council Leader Councillor Kelly Parry stopped by to cut the ribbon on Scotland’s first Alpine Coaster and tried out the ride for herself on Tuesday, September 10. She expressed her delight at the new attraction, describing it as “thrilling” and a “fantastic fun and a real adrenaline rush.” Her enthusiasm reflects the centre's commitment to delivering an unforgettable experience for its visitors.

A Vision for the Future: Transforming the Centre into a National Tourist Attraction

Cllr Parry emphasized the project's ambition to transform the centre into a national tourist attraction, attracting visitors from across Scotland and beyond. She highlighted the economic benefits that the new attraction will bring, creating local employment opportunities and generating revenue that can support vital council services. However, the council remains committed to balancing the economic benefits with responsible financial management, ensuring that all improvements are affordable and sustainable.

More Than Just a Ride: A Multifaceted Leisure Destination

The Alpine Coaster is just one of the many exciting attractions available at Midlothian Snowsports Centre. The centre boasts a range of activities, including skiing, snowboarding, and snow tubing, making it a year-round destination for families and adventure seekers alike. The centre has become a hub for leisure and recreation, offering a unique combination of outdoor adventure and indoor entertainment, making it a compelling choice for families and individuals seeking an unforgettable experience.

A Ride to Remember: The Alpine Coaster is Now Open

With the opening of the Alpine Coaster, Midlothian Snowsports Centre is poised to become a leading tourist destination in Scotland. The centre's commitment to providing thrilling experiences and creating a vibrant community atmosphere makes it a must-visit destination for all.
