Legendary former Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson was at Old Trafford to see his former club take on Liverpool - and he didn't enjoy what he witnessed. Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel says he couldn't help but feel for his former manager Sir Alex Ferguson as he sat with him during the Red Devils' comprehensive defeat by Liverpool. Arne Slot's Reds ran out 3-0 winners at Old Trafford on Sunday thanks to a first half brace from Luis Diaz and a second half strike from Mo Salah, who scored his 10th goal for the club at Old Trafford. The defeat leaves United with two defeats from their three matches this season as pressure mounts on manager Erik ten Hag after the club's decision to stick with him over the summer. By contrast Ten Hag's Dutch compatriot Slot has enjoyed a stunning start to life at Liverpool since replacing Jurgen Klopp, winning all three of his Premier League matches so far without conceding a goal. Former United goalkeeper Schmeichel kept Ferguson company in the Old Trafford stands during the match, and said the hosts' result and performance wasn't befitting of everything the 13-time Premier League winning manager achieved. “I was sat with Sir Alex today, it was really sad,” the Dane told Premier League Productions. "What he did for this football club. Everything that we enjoyed. The great times. Everything. “To sit with him and he is watching this. That, for me, is really, really sad that he is watching that. He did something really extraordinary with this football club. All of that is not there anymore.” Fellow Premier League Productions pundits Michael Owen and Paul Scholes feel the result showed how quickly Slot has adapted at Liverpool, and backed the Reds to push for the title this season. "There was hardly any outgoings, it was a structured squad and he was walking into a squad that has a lot of players at the peak of their powers," said Owen. "There were questions about Liverpool but after three games you think “wow” it is going to take a special team to stop them. They have just swatted United aside." "They could really challenge for that title this year," Scholes added. "Before a ball had been kicked I thought it was going to be Arsenal ’s year to give City a real go and possibly go on to win it. But after watching the first three games, I think Liverpool could go past Arsenal." Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson, the man who brought unprecedented success to Old Trafford, was left heartbroken as he watched his former club suffer a crushing 3-0 defeat against Liverpool. The humiliating loss unfolded right before his eyes, leaving fans and former players alike feeling the pain of a fallen giant. Former United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel revealed just how tough it was for Ferguson to witness the Reds tear apart his beloved team. Schmeichel, who sat beside his former boss during the match, described the scene as “really sad,” highlighting the deep connection Ferguson still has with the club. Manchester United's decline over the past decade has been stark, with the club failing to win a Premier League title since Ferguson retired in 2013. The contrast between the glory days under Ferguson and the current struggles was all too evident during Sunday's match, where a first-half brace from Luis Diaz and a second-half strike from Mohamed Salah sealed United's fate. Speaking to Premier League Productions, Schmeichel said, “I was sat with Sir Alex today, it was really sad. What he did for this football club. Everything that we enjoyed. The great times. Everything. To sit with him and he is watching this. That, for me, is really, really sad that he is watching that.” The defeat marked Manchester United's second loss in just three Premier League games this season, putting immense pressure on manager Erik ten Hag to turn things around. As United fans look ahead to their next match against Southampton on September 14, the shadow of Ferguson’s legacy looms large, a constant reminder of the heights the club once reached and the challenges it now faces. Peter Schmeichel has revealed how Sir Alex Ferguson reacted to Manchester United's brutal 3-0 defeat to Liverpool at Old Trafford. It was another bleak day for Man United on Sunday, something which has become all too common under Erik ten Hag. United started the game quite strongly, but all their good work was undone through two costly mistakes from Casemiro who was at fault for both goals, resulting in the Brazilian being substituted at the break. Mo Salah secured his customary goal at Old Trafford to seal the points for Liverpool Andre Onana couldn't get near his sweeping finish into the bottom corner. Following the match, former United goalkeeper Schmeichel revealed his heartbreaking experience watching the match sat with his old manager, Sir Alex Ferguson. “I was sat with Sir Alex today, it was really sad. What he did for this football club. Everything that we enjoyed. The great times. Everything,” he told Premier League Productions via The Mirror. “To sit with him and he is watching this. That, for me, is really, really sad that he is watching that. He did something really extraordinary with this football club. All of that is not there anymore,” he added. It's been 11 years since Ferguson retired from management and handed the keys to Old Trafford over to David Moyes. Since then United have had eight different managers in charge and slowly slipped down the pecking order in English football. Last campaign Ten Hag guided the club to their worst-ever finish in the Premier League era as they ended the season sat in 8th but managed to salvage European football through their FA Cup victory. Luckily for Ten Hag United have some more favourable fixtures coming up, with Southampton away in their next Premier League outing followed by Barnsley at home in the Carabao Cup. Peter Schmeichel has dropped his honest verdict of watching Manchester United’s 3-0 defeat to Liverpool at Old Trafford while sitting alongside Sir Alex Ferguson. Manchester United welcomed Liverpool to Old Trafford on Sunday and Erik ten Hag’s men were outclassed and outplayed in a dominating performance from the Reds. Luis Diaz broke the deadlock in the 35th minute for Liverpool before the 27-year-old Colombian winger doubled the Reds’ advantage seven minutes later. Mohamed Salah then added Liverpool’s third in the second half, with Erik ten Hag’s side offering very little in response to the Reds’ display at Old Trafford. United have now suffered back-to-back defeats in the Premier League before the start of the September international break. The Red Devils beat Fulham at Old Trafford in their Premier League opener in August before United suffered a 2-1 defeat to Brighton at the Amex last month. Sir Alex Ferguson has been an ever-present figure at Old Trafford long after he called it time on his legendary managerial career in 2013. The 82-year-old Scotsman, who is regarded as one of the best managers of all time, engineered United’s last Premier League title win at the end of the 2012-13 season. Peter Schmeichel sat alongside Ferguson for the match at Old Trafford and summed up the performance by saying it was “really, really sad” to see how United played. “I sat with Sir Alex today, it’s really sad,” he told Optus Sport. “What he did for this football club and everything we enjoyed, the great times and everything, to sit with him and he’s watching this, it’s really, really sad. “He did something really extraordinary with this football club and all of that is not there anymore.” Speaking after the Liverpool defeat, Ten Hag insisted that it was clear that United have to “improve” and still expects his side to “lift another trophy” this season. “We will be fine, but it’s clear we have to improve,” he said, as per Manchester United’s official website. “But [at] the end of the season, I’m quite confident, again, we will have a big chance to lift another trophy.” Ten Hag added: “Again, we have to build a new team. I explained this so many times, also on the Friday in the press conference. “We will build this new team. We have young players. Also, now, we have players to build in, in the season. “Today, I think we had two players, three players, first start of the season, and they didn’t play 90 minutes.”
