Steelers Salute to Service: An Unforgettable Tribute to Our Military Heroes
The Pittsburgh Steelers, renowned for their dedication to the community, are hosting their annual Salute to Service game, a profound tribute to the men and women who serve our nation. This year’s event, held at Acrisure Stadium during their match against the Baltimore Ravens, will be a spectacular display of gratitude and recognition for active-duty service members and veterans. The game promises to be more than just football; it's a celebration of patriotism, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment.
A Multifaceted Tribute to Special Operations
This year's Salute to Service initiative features a significant collaboration with the United States Special Operations Command (SOCOM). This partnership elevated the event to a whole new level, ensuring that the brave men and women of Special Operations receive the recognition they deserve. Allie Weiskopf, Director of Public Affairs for SOCOM, praised the Steelers' commitment, stating, “The Steelers are very much committed to the military and wanted to honor Special Operations. The Steelers are dedicated to involving so much of the Special Ops, to honor them and really ensure that our service members could also go to the game and have a good experience. I would say the Steelers went above and beyond.” The collaboration extended beyond the game itself, encompassing various pre-game displays on Art Rooney Avenue, showcasing military vehicles and equipment including a military helicopter, an Army Robot Dog, an MZRZ special operations tactical vehicle, and a Zodiak small boat. Representatives from the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps will also have tents set up, showcasing gear and providing information on their respective branches.
Pregame Spectacle and In-Game Honors
The pregame festivities will include a thrilling spectacle by the Para-Commando Parachute team, members of the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, jumping into the stadium. Major Ashley Selfridge, a Western Pennsylvania native, will deliver the game ball to General Bryan Fenton, the 13th Commander of U.S. Special Operations Command, a career Special Forces officer. The Steelers will take the field led by active SOCOM members carrying their respective branch flags, preceded by those carrying the American Flag and the POW Flag. These individuals will also be recognized throughout the game on the Jumbotron. The Color Guard will be a SOCOM Joint Forces unit, representing the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, and Space Force. The National Anthem will be performed by Lt. Col. Chad M. Gontkovic, hailing from Johnstown, Pennsylvania, and General Fenton and Command Sergeant Major Shane Shorter will serve as honorary co-captains for the coin toss. The ceremonial Terrible Towel unfurl will also be led by SOCOM members, all guests of the team.
Beyond the Field: Honoring Veterans and Supporting the Community
The Steelers' commitment to honoring service members extends beyond the stadium’s spectacle. The U.S. Steel Salute to Heroes recipient, Retired United States Navy Seal James Hatch, will be recognized for his extraordinary service and bravery. Hatch's actions in rescuing fallen colleagues in Afghanistan exemplify the selflessness and courage often associated with Special Operations. Furthermore, the Steelers also took the time to honor all active-duty personnel and veterans employed by the team and the stadium. A pregame presentation at the POW/MIA Chair will provide a solemn moment of remembrance, with local leaders and military representatives joining together to reflect on the sacrifices made for our country. The Neighborhood Ford Store will host a donation drive for the VA Pittsburgh's Homeless Veterans program on Art Rooney Avenue, providing essential support to those who have served. A Salute to Service video will also feature messages of gratitude from Steelers players and coaches.
Halftime Tribute and Continued Support
The halftime show will feature a special tribute to Rocky Bleier's remarkable journey, from his service in the Army during the Vietnam War to his Super Bowl victories with the Steelers. This tribute, performed by country music star Charles Esten, beautifully encapsulates the spirit of resilience and triumph that epitomizes the American military experience. The American Red Cross will also participate, setting up a holiday card signing station for deployed military members, veterans, and their families. Military shoutouts from deployed service members and fans will be showcased on the Jumbotron throughout the game. The fans will also receive ‘I Salute’ placards to wave their support of our military. The dedication of the Steelers goes beyond this one game. Fans can expect continued engagement with military charities and support initiatives in future home games, further integrating service recognition into Steelers events. This game is not just a sporting event. It is a testament to the unwavering spirit of American heroes. The Steelers are providing an unforgettable day for members of the military and their families. The entire stadium will be united in a chorus of gratitude for the sacrifices made by these brave individuals.
