In what is set to be a feisty and passionate affair, Swansea City and Cardiff City will meet for the latest edition of the South Wales derby in the Championship on Sunday afternoon. The Swans have endured a mixed start to the fresh second-tier campaign, whilst local rivals Cardiff have failed to collect any points from their first two contests.

After taking charge of the club during the middle of the 2023-24 season following the sacking of Michael Duff, Luke Williams has endured a mixed beginning to his first full campaign at the helm of Swansea, earning three points from the first two Championship matches of the term.

On the opening weekend of the second-tier schedule, the Swans made the arduous jaunt up to the Riverside Stadium, where a 25th-minute penalty from Middlesbrough marksman Emmanuel Latte Lath was the only decisive moment of the game, meaning that Michael Carrick's side stole all three points.

Since an unsuccessful trip to Teesside on August 13, Swansea have recorded back-to-back wins at their South Wales base to improve the mood around the Swansea.com Stadium, where Williams's troops eased past League Two Gillingham in the first round of the EFL Cup.

The Swans continued their positive momentum into the Championship last weekend, when strikes from Matt Grimes, Azeem Abdulai and Zan Vipotnik secured a 3-0 win over Preston North End, who were battling without a manager following the sacking of Ryan Lowe earlier in the week.

Collecting zero points and conceding seven goals across their opening two Championship contests of the 2024-25 schedule, Cardiff might have wished for pre-season to last a little while longer, with head coach Erol Bulut coming under immediate pressure after signing a new deal at the club over the summer.

The Bluebirds commenced their second-tier itinerary with the visit of a revamped Sunderland side on August 10, when Black Cats captain Luke O'Nien and Premier League-linked Jack Clarke netted either side of the half-time whistle to secure Regis Le Bris's maiden success as a manager in England.

A much-changed Cardiff outfit were able to lift the spirits around the Cardiff City Stadium on August 13 by beating League One Bristol Rovers in the EFL Cup courtesy of goals from Mark McGuinness and Rubin Colwill, just days before the former moved across Championship battlelines to join Luton Town.

Following the departure of the Irishman, the Bluebirds spent a significant amount of money in the European market to secure a suitable replacement, with Norwegian enforcer Jesper Daland making the switch to South Wales from Belgian Pro League outfit Cercle Brugge for a reported fee of £3.5m.

Swansea are operating without a key member of their goalkeeping unit at the start of this season, with Andy Fisher recovering from a groin issue. As a result, summer arrival Lawrence Vigouroux will continue in between the sticks for the Swans, whilst 22-year-old Nathan Broome acts as the second-choice stopper.

The hosts will be unable to call upon the big-game experience of Joe Allen on Sunday, with the Welsh legend in the medical room due to a toe injury. Cardiff supporters are still awaiting the debut of centre-back Ryotaro Tsunoda, who is fighting back from a muscle injury sustained over the summer.

The Bluebirds options at the focal point of their attack are seriously restricted by the absences of Kion Etete and promising academy graduate Isaak Davies.

Swansea City's Recent Form and Squad

Swansea City possible starting lineup: Vigouroux; Key, Cabango, Darling, Tymon; Franco, Grimes, Eom, Cooper, Pereira; Cullen

Although form often becomes irrelevant during the heat of a local derby, Swansea will take confidence from their start to the season and should back themselves against Cardiff this weekend. The Swans are in a good place, having won their last two matches in the Championship and beating League Two side Gillingham in the EFL Cup.

Cardiff City's Recent Form and Squad

Cardiff City possible starting lineup: Horvath; Ng, Daland, Goutas, O'Dowda; Siopis, Colwill, Kanga, Ramsey, Willock; Meite

The Bluebirds are yet to find their feet in the Championship this campaign, and we cannot envisage Bulut's side winning on enemy territory this weekend. Cardiff have suffered two heavy defeats to Sunderland and Burnley, scoring no goals in the league and conceding seven. The South Wales Derby: A Story of Recent Dominance

Owain Tudur Jones, a former Swansea City midfielder, believes Swansea's current style of play is Cardiff City's "kryptonite." He highlighted how Swansea's recent success against Cardiff has been built on a specific style of play, which he believes Cardiff struggles to cope with. He has stated that he can't see anything other than a Swansea win on Sunday.

The Swans have won five of the past six meetings between the two teams, and their dominant form against Cardiff gives them a psychological advantage heading into the game. Cardiff, on the other hand, will be hoping to turn the tide and finally find a way to get a result against their rivals.

Cardiff's Poor Form and the Importance of the Derby

Despite Cardiff's poor start to the season, former Cardiff striker Michael Chopra believes that the derby is a "totally different game" and that form goes out of the window in these matches. He believes that Cardiff can still get a good result against Swansea, regardless of their recent performances. Erol Bulut, Cardiff's manager, also acknowledges the importance of the derby for the fans and players.

The Key to the Match: Swansea's Attack vs. Cardiff's Defense

Swansea's attack has been impressive so far this season, with the likes of Matt Grimes, Azeem Abdulai and Zan Vipotnik finding the back of the net. They will be looking to continue their goalscoring form against a Cardiff defense that has struggled to keep clean sheets this season. If Swansea can maintain their attacking threat, they will be in a strong position to win the derby. However, Cardiff will be hoping to hold their rivals' attack at bay and find a way to score goals themselves, which has been a challenge for them thus far.

Looking Ahead: A Derby With High Stakes

The South Wales derby is always a fiercely contested match, and this weekend's encounter is likely to be no different. With both teams looking to bounce back from contrasting starts to the season, this derby promises to be a tense and exciting affair. It will be a key battle for both sides, with a win potentially giving the victor a significant boost in confidence and morale. Whether Swansea can continue their dominance over their rivals or Cardiff can turn the tide and snatch a surprise win, this derby is sure to provide a thrilling spectacle for fans of both sides.

The Importance of the Chef and the Countdown

Luke Williams, Swansea's manager, highlights the role of their club chef in motivating the players, particularly for the derby. He emphasizes the chef's ability to inspire the players, even if they don't understand his language. The countdown calendar in the canteen serves as a constant reminder of the importance of the derby, further amplifying the build-up and anticipation among the Swansea squad.

Swansea's Derby Day Advantage

Williams is confident that his side has an advantage in this derby, thanks to their recent success against Cardiff. He is aware of the intensity and significance of the game for the fans, and he is determined to lead his team to victory. Swansea are looking to maintain their dominance in the rivalry and secure their sixth win in the last seven derbies.

Cardiff's Challenges and the Need for a Positive Result

Cardiff's poor form is a concern, but Williams acknowledges the Bluebirds' quality and their ability to cause problems for Swansea. He stresses the need for his team to be brave and make a strong performance. The Bluebirds are in desperate need of a positive result, particularly in a high-profile derby like this.

Swansea's Home Advantage and the Return of Joe Allen

Swansea are looking to capitalize on their home advantage, having won their last two games at the Swansea.com Stadium. They will be hoping to carry their momentum into this crucial derby. The return of Joe Allen from injury is a significant boost for Swansea. Allen's experience and leadership will be vital in guiding the Swans through the intensity of the derby.
