Sydney Harbour Bridge Crash: Two Dead, Pregnant Woman Injured, Traffic Chaos Ensues
The Sydney Harbour Bridge became the scene of a tragic multi-vehicle crash on Thursday afternoon, leaving two men dead and a pregnant woman injured. The incident caused widespread traffic chaos, with delays stretching for kilometers.
The collision, which involved four cars and a bus, occurred around 1.40pm in the southbound lanes. Initial investigations suggest that a northbound car veered into the southbound lanes, triggering a chain reaction of collisions.
Tragically, two men, both drivers, lost their lives at the scene. The deceased have not yet been identified, pending notification of their families.
Adding to the gravity of the situation, a pregnant woman was among the injured. She was transported to the Royal North Shore Hospital with minor injuries and is said to be in a stable condition. The other driver involved in the crash was also taken to the hospital for assessment.
Traffic Chaos and Delays
The crash brought the iconic bridge to a standstill, leading to extensive traffic delays in both directions. By 4.20pm, two lanes in both directions were reopened, but congestion persisted. The incident caused major disruptions to commuters, including those heading to a Travis Scott concert in Sydney.
Transport for NSW coordinator-general Howard Collins urged motorists to avoid the area and consider alternative routes or public transport. “There will be significant traffic to clear for the afternoon peak,” he warned.
Investigation Underway
NSW Police established a crime scene and officers from the Crash Investigations Unit were on the scene. They are investigating the circumstances that led to the crash.
“A crime scene has been established and officers attached to the crash investigations unit are investigating the incident,” NSW Police said. “It is very sad for all those people involved,” said acting Superintendent Clayton McDonald, “There will be numerous members of certain families affected by this and we’ll be working throughout the night with the ongoing investigation to inform the family members of those people who passed away.”
Motorcyclist Arrested
Adding another layer to the incident, a motorcyclist was arrested after attempting to ride through the crash site while emergency services were attending to the victims. The rider was allegedly unlicensed and on an unregistered motorcycle. He was taken to Day Street police station and will be charged with serious traffic offenses.
“That gentleman drove towards police who stood in front of him and [they] were able to stop that gentleman,” McDonald said. “He will be charged with a number of serious traffic offences.”
