A large grass fire that ignited in Sydney's south-west on Wednesday afternoon threatened homes and sparked an emergency warning, but fire crews have since gained control of the blaze. The fire broke out just before 2pm near the intersection of Camden Valley Way and Cowpasture Road, Horningsea Park, in the area of a former amusement park.
The fast-moving fire quickly spread into surrounding grass and bushland, prompting authorities to issue an emergency warning for residents in the Edmondson Park area, advising them it was too late to leave. Strong winds fueled the fire, making it difficult for firefighters to contain. The blaze was fueled by strong winds and quickly spread to nearby homes. At its peak, more than 80 firefighters using 20 fire trucks and two water bombing aircraft worked to bring the fire under control.
Despite the fire's ferocity, firefighters managed to gain the upper hand and eventually brought the blaze under control. The emergency warning was downgraded to a “watch and act” alert and then to an “advice” level as the fire was brought under control.
While the immediate threat to homes has subsided, authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and stay indoors.
