The cult classic The Goonies is set to get a long-awaited sequel, with several original cast members expected to return. According to a source quoted by The Sun, production for the sequel is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2025, with a possible release in 2026 or 2027. The project has been in development for years, with discussions about a follow-up film ongoing for some time before receiving the official green light.

"The Goonies reboot has been talked about for a long time, but it’s finally been given the go-ahead to move forward," the insider revealed. "The team is excited about the opportunity to bring the magic of the original film to a new audience."

The original Goonies, directed by Richard Donner and produced by Steven Spielberg, was released in 1985 and became a cultural phenomenon. The movie followed a group of friends on a treasure-hunting adventure and starred Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Josh Brolin, Jeff Cohen, and Ke Huy Quan. The upcoming sequel is expected to capitalize on the growing popularity of youth adventure films, with Warner Bros. aiming to satisfy the high expectations of fans.

The insider also noted that "the youth adventure market is on fire" and that the film’s production team is eager to develop a plot that will resonate with both longtime fans and new viewers.

The Goonies: A Timeless Classic

Adventure movies for young audiences ignite imagination, becoming timeless classics that captivate generations. The source said the team starting the project is “so excited.” The source added, “It is the early days, but the youth adventure market is on fire, so they want to capitalize on this. The Goonies is 39 years old now and the idea that they can bring the magic of the film to a whole new audience has the team very excited.”

Original Cast Members Return For Sequel

The Goonies starred Sean Astin, 53, as Mikey and Corey Feldman, 53, as Mouth. Astin has had success in films such as The Lord of The Rings trilogy, Rudy, and 50 First Dates. He also portrayed Bob Newby on the Netflix hit Stranger Things. Josh Brolin, 56, also starred as Mikey’s older brother, Brand. Brolin has also had an accomplished career with roles in Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers Endgame, Deadpool 2 and Outer Range on Prime.

Jeff Cohen, 50, who played Chunk, works as an entertainment lawyer and Ke Huy Quan, 53, who portrayed Data is now an Oscar-winning actor, snagging the Best Supporting Actor Award for Everything Everywhere All at Once in 2023. The movie also featured Kerry Green, 57, as Andy, and Martha Plimpton, 53, as Stef. John Matuszak, the ex-NFL player who portrayed Sloth in the movie, passed away in 1989 at age 38.

A Legacy of Cinematic Success

The film was written by Spielberg, who also produced it, and Chris Columbus. It was directed by Richard Donner, who passed away in July 2021. Before Donner died, he and Spielberg tried a few times to develop a sequel to The Goonies, but the idea never went past the pre-production phase. At the time, most of the original cast members weren't fully interested in reprising their roles. Feldman at one time said a remake would “ruin everything.”

During its theatrical run in 1985, The Goonies grossed $125 million, far surpassing the film’s reported budget of $19 million. It has a 91% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and a Certified Fresh critic score of 77%.

A Sequel to Capture the Imagination

The Goonies has a special place in the hearts of many movie fans. The film is still remembered and celebrated today, and its legacy is sure to continue with the upcoming sequel. Fans are excited to see what the new adventure holds for the Goonies, and how they will navigate their way through a whole new set of challenges. While some are hesitant about a sequel, most are ready to “Goonies never say die” once more. With a talented cast and a successful track record, the new Goonies film has the potential to become a modern classic, carrying on the legacy of the original. Whether the sequel can live up to the expectations of fans remains to be seen. But, one thing is certain: the spirit of adventure will live on with the return of the Goonies.
