Toronto FC are the slight favourites to collect three points when they take on DC United at BMO Field in the MLS on Saturday. The hosts are eighth in the Eastern Conference, a point behind Orlando City and five ahead of ninth-place Atlanta United.

DC are one of five teams to have won the fewest matches in the division – sixth – and are bottom, although they are only two points shy of Atlanta.

Toronto FC's recent performance

The Reds will be hoping to continue their recent winning ways, having recorded three victories and nine points in their last four MLS matches. They will be looking for their third consecutive home victory against D.C. United. They have consistently managed to stay in a playoff position throughout the MLS campaign.

Toronto FC advanced to the 2024 TELUS Canadian Championship Final after defeating Forge FC of the Canadian Premier League by a 1-0 scoreline at BMO Field. They asserted their dominance and scored the contest’s opening and only goal when Lorenzo Insigne volleyed home Federico Bernardeschi’s cross five minutes into the second half. The 50th minute effort stood as the game-winning goal and helped the hosts advance to the tournament final on away goals after the 1-0 victory and 2-2 aggregate scoreline.

Toronto FC recorded two victories and six points from their last three regular season matches between July 13 and July 20. This past weekend, the Reds marked the return to their MLS campaign with a 1-0 road win against Houston Dynamo FC at Shell Energy Stadium. Prince Owusu’s 54th minute header from Federico Bernardeschi’s corner proved to be the game-winner and the difference between the two sides in the one-goal contest.

DC United's recent performance

For a fifth time in the 2024 domestic campaign, DC United were beaten by a single goal last weekend, suffering another blow in their post-season quest. The Black and Red have not made the MLS Cup playoffs since 2019, and with eight regular-season games to go, they are two points below that line in the East and needing to overtake six teams.

Despite suffering their share of shaky performances in 2024, they have consistently managed to stay in a playoff position throughout the MLS campaign. They have struggled defensively, conceding the joint second-most goals in the league alongside CF Montreal (54). They were defeated 4-3 to Dallas last Saturday.

Key Players

Toronto’s leading goalscorer in MLS, Federico Bernardeschi (eight goals), along with captain Jonathan Osorio, will have to sit out because of yellow card accumulation, while Raoul Petretta is eligible to return from his suspension. Prince Owusu had the only goal in their victory over the Dynamo, as Sean Johnson made four stops to collect his second successive domestic clean sheet.

In their defeat versus Dallas, DC did not have Christopher McVey available because of a knock, while Kristian Fletcher and Jackson Hopkins were sidelined with ankle sprains. Due to a torn ACL, Conner Antley is not expected to return to the lineup for them this season, and Russell Canouse is out because of a health problem. A pair of cautions given to Boris Enow in the opening half against Dallas means that the midfielder from Cameroon will be suspended for this upcoming fixture.

Predictions

While Toronto FC have a slight edge, it is worth noting that DC United has a bit of history against them in recent years. They are winless in their last three regular-season encounters played in Canada while losing by a single goal in their previous two visits to BMO Field.
