Much has been said about Tottenham Hotspur’s long wait for a trophy, but Micky van de Ven has revealed he and the team are fighting tooth and nail to change that.

It has now been 16 years since Tottenham last won a trophy. Since that League Cup win in 2008, the Lilywhites have finished second in the league twice, and fell at the final hurdle in both the Champions League in 2019, and the Carabao Cup in 2021.

With Ange Postecoglou at the helm now, there is renewed optimism that this serial winner can be the man to end the trophy drought for Spurs.

And, every player in the team is eager to be part of that change, too, it seems. Speaking to the press today (via Football.London), Micky van de Ven insisted the squad are going to give it their all to deliver success for Tottenham.

He said: “We’re going to do everything to win a trophy.”

If Spurs are to win a trophy anytime soon, it is likely van de Ven will be a central figure in that success. The centre-back is arguably the cornerstone of Postecoglou’s backline, but he also offers plenty going forward, too, as we’ve seen on multiple occasions already this season.

Discussing his incredible assists against Manchester United at the end of last month and Everton before that, van de Ven said: “I feel free to run, to be honest, and do what I want.

“When you have the trust you can do it. Against Everton, the pitch was open and against Manchester United the same. I thought if I start sprinting now it will be difficult to stop me.”

The whole first-team squad at Spurs right now just feels really well-balanced and positive, and we have quality all over the pitch. Under Postecoglou, the players are showing more resilience and a better ability to control games, and I think a big trophy win is coming either this season or next.

Spurs’ New Star Talks Up His Style Of Play

The Dutch defender emerged at AZ as a youngster, but did not get any first team chances.

He eventually moved to Voldenam and then Wolfsburg before getting his big Premier League move to Spurs.

Postecoglou told reporters this week, as his team prepare to take on AZ in the Europa League: “With Micky, fair to say he developed late but very quickly. Because I think even at Volendam, there was a period when they were unsure about him.

“You could tell once physically he grew and the kind of player he was, his journey went very quickly at Volendam and the year he had in the Bundesliga he adjusted really well.

“For us last year he was outstanding in his first year in the Premier League. Obviously he had an injury which set him back a little bit but he's growing all the time, maturing and I think he will become more of an influence at national team level.

“He's now played a couple of games at left-back, left centre-back, The more he plays with the national team will give him even more belief but he's going very well and I'm sure he'll be an important member of our team but also the Dutch international team.”

Van de Ven’s Fast Pace

Tottenham Hotspur star Micky van de Ven has revealed the reason why he likes to play a fast-paced high-line style of football.

The Dutch central defender joined the north Londoners from Bundesliga outfit Wolfsburg last summer and has been an important player for Ange Postecoglou.

Despite facing a fairly long term injury last year Van de Ven has made 37 all-competition appearances for Spurs.

In his nine appearances this season, Van de Ven has registered two assists and the most eye-catching one came against Manchester United last month where made an exceptional run to provide an assist to Brennan Johnson.

The Holland international has revealed his recovery pace makes him enjoy playing a high-line and he stressed he loves playing attacking football under Postecoglou.

“I really enjoy it as I have the speed to recover”, the Spurs central defender told a press conference about his lightning-fast recovery pace.

“I enjoy playing in the high line and the offensive football.”

Van de Ven will be looking to provide his side with his recovery pace this week when they face AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League and Crystal Palace in the Premier League.

Spurs Can Achieve Beautiful Things

Van de Ven’s comments come after Postecoglou, as quoted by The Independent, said: “We know our quality. We know we have some unbelievable players in the team and an unbelievable group of players.”

The Tottenham manager has a point. This Spurs side has looked really strong in recent games, and they have the players to really challenge for a trophy, despite their struggles in recent years. However, it’s one thing to say you can achieve beautiful things, and it’s another thing to actually do it.

It will be interesting to see whether Spurs can live up to van de Ven’s bold statement and finally end their trophy drought this season. They’re certainly off to a good start under Postecoglou, but the Premier League and Europa League are always extremely competitive.

One thing is for sure, the Tottenham fans will be hoping that their team can deliver a trophy soon. They’ve been waiting a long time, and they’re certainly ready for some success.
