Tragic Loss of Young Woman in Ballina

Communities in Carrick-on-Shannon, Crossmolina, and Ballina are mourning the devastating loss of Róisín Cryan, a young Leitrim woman whose body was tragically found in the River Moy in Ballina on Saturday morning. The discovery ended an extensive search that had been underway since Thursday, involving Gardaí and emergency services. The 28-year-old was a native of Attyrory, Carrick-on-Shannon, but had been living and working in Ballina.

Heartfelt Tributes Pour In

The news of Róisín's passing has prompted an outpouring of grief and tributes, painting a picture of a beloved individual. Described as "a gentle and sweet soul," "a beautiful person, inside and out," and "friendly and humble," Róisín’s memory is being cherished by countless individuals. Social media and RIP.ie have been filled with heartfelt messages from those whose lives she touched. One mourner wrote, "My sincere condolences to the Cryan and Loftus families. Róisín was such a kind and lovely person, my thoughts are with those closest to her at this difficult time." Another shared, "I was extremely lucky to have met with Róisín and worked with her a few years ago. She was a beautiful girl. Deepest sympathy to all of Róisín’s loving family and friends."

A Life Cut Short

Róisín was more than just a kind soul; she was a cherished daughter, a loving fiancée, and a devoted sister. She is survived by her parents, Joe and Marguerite Cryan; her fiancé, well-known Mayo footballer Conor Loftus; her sisters, Annmarie, Clare, Ruth, and Maeve; Clare’s fiancé, Eugene; and a wide circle of family, friends, and colleagues. Her death has cast a long shadow, particularly on her fiancé, Conor, a member of the Crossmolina Deel Rovers team. He was scheduled to play in the All-Ireland Club Intermediate Championship final at Croke Park on Sunday. The GAA, in a poignant gesture of respect, postponed the match until a later date, recognizing the immense grief felt by Conor and the Cryan family.

Funeral Arrangements

The funeral arrangements for Róisín Cryan reflect the profound impact she had on her community. Visitation will be held on Monday, January 13th, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at The Heritage Centre, Chapel of Rest, Church Lane, Carrick-on-Shannon. The removal to St. Mary’s Church, Carrick-on-Shannon, will take place on Tuesday evening, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday at 11 a.m. Burial will then take place at Drumlion Cemetery. The family requests that the house remain private and has suggested donations in lieu of flowers to the Grainne Uaille Sub Aqua Club and River Moy Search and Rescue, the groups involved in the search efforts. They have expressed their gratitude for the outpouring of sympathy and support.

A Community in Mourning

Róisín Cryan's story is a reminder of the fragility of life and the profound impact a single life can have on a community. The widespread grief demonstrates the depth of her connections and the warmth of her presence in the lives of those who knew her. Her memory will be carried forward by those she left behind, serving as a beacon of kindness and compassion. The outpouring of support from communities across Ireland underscores the unity and empathy that emerge during times of profound loss. Many have offered words of comfort and support to the grieving families, demonstrating the strength of the human spirit in times of tragedy. The postponement of the GAA match is a powerful testament to the respect held for Róisín and her family within the sporting community.

The Cryan and Loftus families have requested that donations be made to the search and rescue teams in lieu of flowers. This is a fitting tribute to a life that has touched many hearts and to the dedication of those who were involved in bringing closure to the family. May she rest in peace. May Róisín's memory serve as a testament to the value of compassion and kindness and a celebration of her vibrant life, cut tragically short.
