Triple M host and Channel Nine sports reporter Ben Dobbin was rushed to hospital last week after suffering a horrific accident that almost left him permanently wheelchair bound.

The 48-year-old reporter was in hospital with a broken neck and spinal injuries after falling off his bike while training for the Noosa Triathlon last Wednesday.

Dobbin said the accident happened when he swerved to miss a snake on the road and he wound up colliding with his cycling coach Cam Hughes.

“My front tyre clipped his (Hughes') back tyre and I lost control, shot across (the road), got spat out and went head first into the one and only steel pole,” he told The Courier Mail from a Brisbane hospital.

An ambulance was called for the presenter and he was diagnosed with a fractured C5 vertebrae, he told the masthead.

Doctors reportedly told Dobbin there was a chance he might not be able to walk again as he underwent surgery through his throat, with a risk he may lose his voice during the operation.

“I told him ‘that’s my career’ and he said ‘my priority is to save you from being in a wheelchair for the rest of your life’,” Dobbin said.

“He said most people who have this type of injury don’t ever walk again.”

A Long Road to Recovery

The reporter has since taken his first steps since the accident, but noted he was in for a “long road to recovery”.

Dobbin said he had received an outpouring of support since his accident, with the presenter even hearing from former Broncos coach Kevin Walters the day he was fired.

The father of five has been spotted with his children, including twin 18-month-old boys, in his hospital bed following the horrific accident.

A History of Health Issues

His broken neck comes about two years after he underwent heart surgery in early 2022 as he ignored chest pains for about six weeks.

On the advice of members from his walking club, Dobbin booked an appointment with his GP who sent him to hospital.

It was here a major blockage, known as the widow maker, was discovered and he quickly underwent the life-saving surgery.

A Remarkable Recovery

Despite the severity of his injuries, Dobbin's resilience has been inspiring. He has shown remarkable progress in his recovery, taking his first steps after the accident and expressing a determination to get back on his feet.

This accident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safety precautions when cycling and the potential consequences of seemingly minor incidents. It is a story of resilience and determination, highlighting the strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity. Dobbin's story serves as an inspiration to us all.

From Clooney Confrontation to Bike Crash: A Look at Ben Dobbin's Life

Dobbin has been in the public eye for many years, known for his work on Triple M and Channel Nine. He's not only a talented broadcaster but also a father of five, including twin 18-month-old boys. Beyond the microphone, he's faced personal challenges, from health scares to even a brief confrontation with George and Amal Clooney.

In 2021, Dobbin claimed he was asked to leave a luxury Queensland resort after an awkward situation with George and Amal Clooney. While on his honeymoon at the Qualia resort on Hamilton Island, Dobbin's wife Amity spotted Amal and decided to take a photo, which was later leaked to Channel Nine news. This incident, though seemingly minor, led to the couple being asked to leave the resort. The Clooney's privacy was violated, and the resort, known for its luxurious and private setting, acted to protect the comfort of their guests.

Despite these setbacks, Dobbin continues to be a well-respected broadcaster and a dedicated father. His commitment to his family and his profession is evident in his willingness to bounce back from these challenges. His accident serves as a reminder that life can throw unexpected curveballs, but with determination, resilience, and the support of loved ones, even the toughest challenges can be overcome.
