Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill was detained by police outside Hard Rock Stadium on Sunday morning just hours before the Dolphins were scheduled to kick off against the Jacksonville Jaguars. However, Hill has been released and plans to play, according to his agent.
Hill was detained by police for an unspecified traffic violation. Shortly before 11:00 Eastern, photos of Hill in handcuffs began circulating on social media.
Video of Hill being placed in handcuffs while surrounded by multiple police officers surfaced online. Hill was seen face down on the ground while being handcuffed, leading to questions about the severity of the incident and the reason for the handcuffs.
Hill's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, told ESPN that the star NFL player was detained by police over an alleged driving violation.
"I just left Tyreek and he is getting ready to play today," Rosenhaus said.
Rosenhaus did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Fox News Digital.
Several teammates saw the incident and stopped to offer support, according to the team. Hill and all other players involved have safely arrived to the stadium and will be available for today’s game.
Smith wrote on X alongside a video of Hill being placed in cuffs on the ground: 'Look for yourself. This is b.s. Totally unnecessary.
'And btw…., I know the Scottie Scheffler incident was in Georgia — not Florida — and he was arrested, detained, booked. I also know we don’t know all the details, blah….blah…..blah! But he wasn’t faced down on the ground in cuffs? Then forcibly sat down again by officers a second time. Nah! This story isn’t going away — and it doesn’t need to.'
Sources told ESPN's Jeff Darlington that Hill was stopped for speeding and then got into a verbal altercation with police and was subsequently placed in handcuffs.
Hill was cited for reckless driving, sources told Darlington.
In an interview with ESPN, Hill's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, called it "a heartbreaking situation" that was "completely unnecessary." He said he wants to make sure his client wasn't mistreated and that seeing his client handcuffed was "mindboggling."
"We will investigate," Rosenhaus said. "We will look out for Tyreek."
He added that he was "just thankful Tyreek is OK" and thanked the team for helping to deescalate the situation.
Hill, who is entering his third season with the Dolphins after joining from the Kansas City Chiefs back in 2022, is expected to build on a fantastic 2023 season. He was garnering MVP attention through most of last season. He finished the year with 119 catches for 1,799 receiving yards and 13 touchdown receptions. He led the league in receiving yards and touchdown catches.
Hill will be in his third season with the Dolphins, but Miami is still looking for that elusive playoff victory. Miami has not won a playoff game since the 2000 season - an AFC Wild Card victory over the Indianapolis Colts.
The situation is reminiscent of golfer Scottie Scheffler, who was arrested before playing in the PGA Championship in May after a police officer stopped him for a moving violation. In that case, Scheffler was able to play and later had the charges dropped. Hill will try to move past it in a hurry as well.
The Dolphins released a statement on Hill: "This morning, WR Tyreek Hill was pulled over for a traffic incident about one block from the stadium and briefly detained by police. He has since been released. Several teammates saw the incident and stopped to offer support. Tyreek and all other players involved have safely arrived to the stadium and will be available for today’s game."
The Dolphins have not won a playoff game since the 2000 season.
