Dominant USWNT Tops Australia to Win Group B
The U.S. women's national team (USWNT) continued its winning ways at the 2024 Paris Olympics, securing a 2-1 victory over Australia in their final group stage match.
Despite Australia's defensive approach, the USWNT controlled the match and created numerous scoring opportunities. The first goal came in the 43rd minute when Trinity Rodman reacted quickly to a deflected ball and put it away. Australia's hopes of a comeback were dashed in the 77th minute when Korbin Albert unleashed a brilliant strike from outside the box.
Rodman Shines with Goal and Assist
Rodman, along with Sophia Smith, has been a key figure in the USWNT's success thus far. Rodman's goal against Australia was her second of the tournament, while Smith assisted on both USWNT goals.
Defense Stands Strong, Despite Late Goal
The USWNT defense remained solid throughout the match, limiting Australia to just two shots on goal. Alyssa Naeher made a comfortable save on Australia's first shot on target in the 53rd minute, preserving the USWNT's lead.
Although Australia managed to score a goal in stoppage time, it was too little too late, and the USWNT held on for the win.
Quarterfinal Matchup Set
With the victory, the USWNT finished atop Group B and will face Japan in the quarterfinals on August 3. Japan finished second in Group C behind world champion Spain.
