Honoring Those Who Served: Veterans Day Events Across the Nation

The United States marks Veterans Day each year on November 11th, a day dedicated to honoring those who have served in the United States Armed Forces. This year, communities across the nation are hosting a variety of events, from school assemblies to parades, to pay tribute to veterans and their sacrifices.

Schools Across the Nation Celebrate Veterans Day

Schools across the nation are taking part in honoring veterans, with events ranging from special assemblies to luncheon gatherings. These events provide an opportunity for students to learn about the sacrifices of veterans and show their appreciation for their service. In Galena, Kansas, Galena High School held a program where the junior class planned and implemented a celebration that included performances by the school’s choir and band. The event underscored the school’s commitment to honoring veterans.

"We respect our veterans and we’re excited that they’re here and we want to thank them and this is our way to show that we care about them and we, we appreciate their service," said Beau Sarwinski, Principal, Galena High School.

In Missouri, McDonald County High School joined the nationwide effort by hosting a luncheon prepared by culinary students and an assembly where veterans like Alan Sink, a Vietnam veteran, were honored.

"I just, you know, like their service is unmatched in what they’ve done for this country I mean, we try to do things for them, obviously this isn’t anything compared to what they’ve done for us but, it’s just stuff we can do to show that we appreciate them and what they’ve done," said Jarrett McCool, High School senior.

Local Communities Organize Events in Honor of Veterans

Beyond schools, communities nationwide are organizing events to honor veterans. In Neosho, Missouri, Newton County held a special ceremony at the courthouse to honor employees who have served their country. The event recognized the contributions of both current and former military members.

"They’re why we have our freedom, I mean it’s definitely, we need to acknowledge them everyday of the year but this is our day that we can actually do it and invite them in to thank them personally," said Daniel Swem, Newton County Presiding Commissioner.

Remembering and Recognizing: A Day of Reflection and Gratitude

Veterans Day is not just a day of celebration, but also a day of reflection. It is a time to remember the sacrifices made by those who have served and to reflect on the importance of their service. The events held across the country are a testament to the deep gratitude felt for veterans.

"I enjoy getting together with other veterans and then the, I call them kids of course, they’re in high school, they are so friendly, they’ll come up and thank me, which we didn’t get that when we came back," said Alan Sink, Vietnam Veteran.

A Look Beyond the Festivities

While parades and ceremonies play a vital role in acknowledging veterans, communities are going beyond the typical celebrations. In Caldwell, Idaho, a year-long effort has resulted in the refurbishing, restoring, and relocating of several memorials for veterans. This project is a testament to the dedication of the community in ensuring that the sacrifices of veterans are remembered and honored.

Honoring the Legacy of Service

Events held across the country are a testament to the enduring gratitude for those who have served in the United States Armed Forces. The events remind us of the importance of recognizing and honoring veterans not just on Veterans Day, but throughout the year.

A Day of Remembrance and Celebration

As Veterans Day approaches, communities across the nation are preparing to honor those who have served. Events ranging from school assemblies to parades, memorials, and luncheons will serve as a testament to the deep gratitude for veterans and their sacrifices.
