Do you buy your apple juice from Walmart? If so, you might want to check the brand of your bottle before you sip.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a voluntary recall for 9,535 cases of Great Value Apple Juice sold at Walmart stores in 25 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia. The apple juice was sold in six-packs of eight-ounce PET plastic bottles (UPC 0-78742-29655-5). The recall, numbered F-1746-2024, was initially announced on August 15, 2024. The FDA stated that the apple juice contained inorganic arsenic levels exceeding the action level set in industry guidance.

On August 23, 2024, the recall was escalated to Class II by the FDA. This classification indicates that the product “may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”

The FDA states that “current research indicates that inorganic arsenic is more dangerous than organic arsenic.” The agency also highlights that long-term exposure to inorganic arsenic in adults has been linked to skin disorders, increased risks of skin, bladder, and lung cancers, and cardiovascular disease.

Short-term exposure to inorganic arsenic can lead to nausea, vomiting, bruising, and numbness or burning sensations in the hands and feet, according to the FDA.

What to Know About the Recall

Inorganic arsenic is a confirmed carcinogen, a substance that can cause cancer, and is a “chemical contaminant in drinking-water globally,” according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

The intergovernmental organization emphasizes that inorganic arsenic compounds, typically found in water, are highly toxic. In contrast, organic arsenic compounds, found in seafood, are less harmful.

The recall was initiated by Refresco Beverages US Inc., located in Tampa, FL, as stated in the FDA report. The Great Value Apple Juice with a best-if-used-by date of December 28, 2024, is the product subject to the recall.

States Affected by the Recall

The recalled Great Value Apple Juice was distributed in the following states and regions:

  • Alabama
  • Connecticut
  • District of Columbia
  • Delaware
  • Florida
  • Georgia
  • Illinois
  • Indiana
  • Kentucky
  • Massachusetts
  • Maryland
  • Maine
  • Michigan
  • Mississippi
  • North Carolina
  • New Hampshire
  • New Jersey
  • New York
  • Ohio
  • Pennsylvania
  • Puerto Rico
  • Rhode Island

  • West Virginia

Potential Health Risks and FDA Response

According to the Associated Press (AP), The FDA does not anticipate the levels of inorganic arsenic found in the Great Value apple juice to cause serious health consequences. The agency has not yet released any reports of illnesses associated with the apple juice recall.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) explains that arsenic, a naturally occurring element, is found throughout the Earth’s crust and can be present in some foods. The FDA routinely tests food for arsenic, prioritizing items consumed by young children.

Research indicates that inorganic arsenic is more toxic to humans than organic arsenic, with more severe health effects, according to the NIH. Inorganic arsenic is classified as a human carcinogen.

Walmart's Response

Walmart spokesperson Molly Blakeman stated in a statement, “The health and safety of our customers is always a top priority. We have removed this product from our impacted stores and are working with the supplier to investigate.”

Refresco Beverages US Inc. and the Recall

Refresco Beverages US Inc., the Florida-based manufacturer, issued a voluntary recall after discovering levels of inorganic arsenic exceeding industry standards (13.2 parts per billion) in their Great Value apple juice. Refresco and Walmart have not yet responded to requests for comment from the AP.

A Call for Action

If you have purchased Great Value Apple Juice that falls under the recall, it is crucial to refrain from consuming it. Instead, return the product to your local Walmart store for a full refund.

This recall serves as a reminder that even seemingly safe food products can contain potentially harmful substances. It’s essential to remain vigilant about food safety practices and to be informed about product recalls. Staying informed can help protect your health and well-being.

Understanding the Risks of Arsenic

Arsenic is a naturally occurring element found in the Earth's crust. While low levels of arsenic are typically present in many food products, inorganic arsenic, a more toxic form, can pose health risks, especially with long-term exposure.

The FDA regulates arsenic levels in food, prioritizing products consumed by vulnerable populations, like children. The agency sets industry action levels for arsenic in various foods, but it’s important to note that these levels are not legally enforceable standards.

The Role of Food Safety

This recall highlights the critical role of food safety practices and the importance of food testing and monitoring by regulatory agencies. By ensuring that food products meet safety standards, these agencies play a vital role in protecting public health.

Taking Action

As consumers, we can also play a role in safeguarding our food safety by:

  • Checking for product recalls: Regularly checking for product recalls issued by the FDA or other relevant agencies.
  • Reading labels: Paying attention to food labels and product information, including ingredients, best-by dates, and any warnings or advisories.
  • Proper food storage: Storing food correctly to prevent contamination and spoilage.
  • Washing hands: Washing hands thoroughly before and after handling food.

By adhering to these practices, we can minimize the risk of exposure to harmful substances and ensure the safety of our food supply.

Stay Informed, Stay Safe

The apple juice recall underscores the importance of staying informed about food safety issues and taking proactive steps to protect our health. By understanding the potential risks associated with arsenic and other contaminants, we can make informed choices and prioritize our well-being.

In Conclusion: A Call for Vigilance

The Walmart apple juice recall serves as a reminder of the potential dangers lurking within our food supply, even in seemingly innocuous products. While the FDA does not expect the levels of arsenic in the recalled juice to cause severe health consequences, it underscores the importance of vigilance and awareness when it comes to food safety.

By staying informed about product recalls and practicing safe food handling habits, we can contribute to ensuring our own safety and that of our families. Remember, knowledge is power when it comes to protecting our health and well-being.
