The San Francisco 49ers have had brutal injury luck this year, as many of the team's offensive stars are out for the team's game against the Cowboys. That bad luck only got worse Sunday night, when Jordan Mason re-injured his shoulder during San Franciscos' 30-24 victory vs. Dallas.
Mason, who is filling in for an injured Christian McCaffrey, entered Sunday second in the league with 667 rushing yards and five touchdowns on 128 carries. San Francisco is also missing Brandon Aiyuk and Jauan Jennings, whilc Deebo Samuel and George Kittle are both playing despite being "questionable" during the week.
The 49ers have sent starting running back Jordan Mason to the locker room late in the first half against the Cowboys. Mason exited the game with a shoulder injury in the second quarter, and the 49ers declared him "questionable" to return. The running back went back to the locker room with two minutes left in the first half to be evaluated as the rest of the 49ers' offense remained on the field. He came out with the team after the break, wearing his helmet on the sideline, but Isaac Guerendo handled carries for the majority of the second half.
Ultimately, Mason didn't return in the second half.
Mason had been dealing with a shoulder injury this season, as he is playing through an AC joint sprain in his shoulder, an injury he suffered in Week 6 against the Seahawks. However, during practice this week, Mason was limited on Wednesday and Thursday but was a full participant on Friday.
Mason (shoulder) is questionable to return to Sunday's game against the Cowboys. Mason stayed down after a first-quarter run, checked back into the game but subsequently went to the locker room after rushing six times for 18 yards. He had been playing through an AC joint sprain in his shoulder that he suffered in Week 6 against the Seahawks, so this is presumably an aggravation of that injury. Isaac Guerendo will lead San Francisco's backfield if Mason's unable to return Sunday.
With Mason out, Guerendo took over in the backfield, totaling three carries for 38 yards. He added another two carries for 14 yards and a TD on San Francisco's opening drive in the third. Guerendo was a 2024 fourth-round pick out of Wisconsin who had 23 carries for 142 yards in San Francisco's first seven games of the season. After Guerendo, veteran Patrick Taylor Jr. is the only other active running back on the team.
San Francisco 49ers running back Jordan Mason left Sunday night's game against the Dallas Cowboys with a shoulder injury and was listed as questionable to return. He had briefly re-entered the game before exiting for good, replaced by rookie Isaac Guerendo.
The 49ers ended up beating the Cowboys 30-24. Guerendo finished with a game-leading 85 rushing yards, averaging an impressive 6.1 yards per carry.
Mason has been managing an AC joint sprain from Week 6 against the Seattle Seahawks. After Sunday's game, head coach Kyle Shanahan noted that Mason's latest injury was to the same shoulder.
"JP (Mason) got banged up," Shanahan said. "JP tried to come back, and maybe could have, but Isaac was rolling and did a good job."
The San Francisco 49ers have been forced to deal with plenty of injury headaches this season, the most recent of which sent wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk to season-ending injured reserve after tearing both his ACL and MCL in the Week 7 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Already missing All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey all year long, as he recovers from Achilles issues, the Niners have successfully turned to No. 2 tailback Jordan Mason to shoulder the load.
Entering San Francisco's Week 8 Sunday Night Football showdown against the Dallas Cowboys, Mason boasted the second most rush yards in the NFL with 667.
However, toward the end of the first quarter, Jordan Mason went down after a 6-yard carry and required some attention from the 49ers' training staff.
Mason was able to walk off the field under his own power, which is clearly a good sign.
After the NBC Sports commercial break in the wake of the running back's injury, sideline reporter Melissa Stark pointed out how Mason quickly put on his helmet and appeared to be ready to go after missing a handful of plays.
Meanwhile, the Niners turned to rookie running back Isaac Guerendo as the fill-in replacement for Mason on a handful of plays.
So far in the game, Mason has 14 yards on three carries prior to the injury.
It appears as if Mason will return to action soon, although one has to hope the injury doesn't wind up lingering or rearing its ugly head later on in the game.
The Niners Empire is losing its soldiers. During the week 8 matchup against the Cowboys, many players of the 49ers got injured. It was a tough sight for the Faithful. They have already seen their team lose to the Chiefs in the revenge game last week. Now, their running backs Jordan Mason and Isaac Guerendo have suffered injuries.
During the first quarter, Jordan Mason injured his shoulder. He looked in pain and even went to the sidelines for a couple of minutes. However, he later returned to the field. In the 2nd quarter, the running back went to the medical tent for further checkup. Before leaving the field, he had 6 rushes for 18 yards. He was marked as questionable to return.
As Mason’s replacement, the team went ahead with the rookie running back Isaac Guerendo. He looked in fine form and quickly gained yards. At 12:57 mark on the clock in the 3rd quarter, he scored his first NFL touchdown. Later, he also went to the medical tent for evaluation. The offense is crumbling.
Guerendo looked great as Jordan Mason’s replacement when he was on the field. The rookie had 14 carries for 85 yards. His touchdown also gave them the lead over the Cowboys. But the fans were worried. The Niners are already struggling with injuries to key players like Brandon Aiyuk and Christian McCaffrey.
However, the injuries didn’t affect them heavily as they managed to win the game by 30-24.
After 8 weeks, the Niners are sitting at a 4-4 win-loss record. It was a much-needed win. They are now in the 2nd place in their division. However, they have to be very careful as they are in the 10th position in NFC after week 8. They have the time now to reassess their strategies and check out the injured players. Week 9 is a bye week.
Even in the running back departments, they can check out their options for future games. While Jordan Mason and Isaac Guerendo are being evaluated for injuries, Christian McCaffrey has been giving positive signs about his recovery. He was seen talking to the coach and players during the practice sessions last week and is highly probable to return during the week 10 matchup against the Buccaneers.
The head coach Kyle Shanahan has a major task at hand. The season is halfway done. But they would have to improve their performances. Week 8’s win must have given a boost to the locker room. Can they maintain the momentum? The Faithful fully trust their team to break free of past results and go all-in for the Super Bowl. The times ahead will be much more exciting as each game will be crucial.
Additionally, linebacker Dee Winters suffered a concussion, wide receiver Deebo Samuel exited with a rib injury, and cornerback Renardo Green sustained an ankle injury. Shanahan stated he didn't yet have details on the severity of Samuel and Green's injuries.
Samuel was questionable to play against the Cowboys after a recent hospitalization for pneumonia but was active for the game.
The 49ers have been hit hard by injuries this season, with 10 players currently on injured reserve. The latest setback came with wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who is out for the season due to a torn ACL and MCL.
San Francisco could see some players return after the bye week. Running back Christian McCaffrey, sidelined this season with Achilles tendinitis, is expected to resume practice, along with wide receiver Jauan Jennings, who has missed the last two games with a hip injury.
The 49ers' next game is on November 10, when they face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Raymond James Stadium.
