Anthony Scully, a former West Ham United striker, is hoping to reignite his career after a couple of frustrating seasons. The 26-year-old joined Colchester United on a season-long loan from Portsmouth on deadline day, eager to get back to playing regularly after limited opportunities with Wigan Athletic and Portsmouth in the past two seasons.

Scully's journey has taken him from West Ham's youth system to Lincoln City, where he established himself as a prolific goalscorer, netting 37 goals in over 100 appearances across two seasons. However, his move to Wigan Athletic in 2022 proved to be a short-lived one, with limited playing time. Subsequently, he joined Portsmouth, but again, his appearances were limited. The former West Ham youngster is desperate to get back on the pitch and is confident that Colchester United provides the perfect environment for him to do so.

Scully's Motivation and Colchester's Appeal

Scully's decision to move to Colchester was driven by his desire to play regular football and be in an environment where he feels wanted. He admitted that the past two years have been challenging, marked by injuries and limited opportunities. He felt he wasn't getting the chances he needed to perform, a situation that was difficult for him to handle, particularly after returning from pre-season super fit only to be hampered by injuries.

Scully's move to Colchester United was triggered by a late-hour conversation with former U's sporting director Dmitri Halajko. The two had a pre-existing relationship from Scully's time at West Ham, and Scully felt that Halajko's departure to Ipswich Town's academy would not hinder his move to Colchester. He had heard good things about the club and the Cowleys' management style, and felt it would be a perfect fit for him.

The Cowleys and a Familiar Faces

Scully's familiarity with several Colchester players from his time at Lincoln City also played a part in his decision. He already knew Teddy Bishop, Tom Hopper, Jack Payne, Harry Anderson and Alex Woodyard, and the fact that he also knew goalkeeper Matt Macey from Portsmouth, further contributed to his comfort level. This familiar environment is expected to help him settle in quickly and get back to playing his best football.

A Fresh Start

Scully is determined to make the most of his time at Colchester United, hoping to contribute to the club's ambition. He feels fit, healthy, and ready to go, having kept himself in good condition despite limited match action. He is eager to integrate into the team and contribute to Colchester's success. Colchester United have a busy schedule, facing Bromley at home on Saturday, and Scully is hoping to make his debut for the club. He is eager to get back to playing, and he is confident that he will make a positive impact at Colchester United.

The move to Colchester provides Scully with an opportunity to revitalize his career. With the club's ambitions and a manager who he believes suits his style of play, he hopes to find the success he has been seeking.
