The Organic Centre in Rossinver, Co. Leitrim is set to host its much-loved Apple Day-Harvest Festival on Sunday, September 29, from 12 to 4pm. This free event promises a feast for the senses, offering visitors the chance to immerse themselves in all things autumnal.

Expert Talks and Tours

A highlight of the day will be talks and tours from the centre’s apple and tree expert, Phil Wheal. Visitors will also hear from botanist Maria Cullen, who will provide an important update on the threat of fireblight to native hawthorn and apple trees. For wildlife enthusiasts, NPWS's Robert Wheeldon will host an information stand on the fascinating local ospreys, birds of prey recently discovered in the area.

Craft Demonstrations and Apple Pressing

Adding to the experience, the inspiring 'Leitrim Women Through Time' exhibition will be on display, along with demonstrations of traditional crafts such as stone carving, weaving, and wool spinning. The centrepiece of the festival will be the popular apple pressing, where children can watch organic apples from the centre's grounds being pressed into juice—and even sample the fresh results. "Apple Day is always a wonderful family event," says Dervilla Keegan of the Organic Centre. "It's a real farm-to-cup experience!"

Sustainable Crafts and Entertainment

Festival-goers can explore an array of local stalls featuring sustainable crafts and foods both indoors and outdoors. There will be plenty to keep families entertained, including heritage games from 'Heritage Crafts Alive' and a nature walk led by Fiona Wheeldon, 'Green Shoots' coordinator and former ranger. Children and adults alike can enjoy natural crafts with skilled artist Sarah Lundy, live music, and, of course, a variety of apple-themed dishes at the Grass Roof Café. There will also be an exhibition from Ciara Smith and Tom O’Brien on willow weaving.

A Celebration of Autumn, Community, and Sustainability

With something for everyone, The Organic Centre’s Apple Day-Harvest Festival promises to be a delightful celebration of autumn, community, and sustainability. The event offers a chance to enjoy the beauty of the season, connect with nature, and learn about sustainable living. The festival is a testament to the importance of local community and the joy of shared experiences. It is a perfect opportunity to enjoy a day out with family and friends while celebrating the abundance of the harvest season.
