The CONMEBOL World Cup qualifiers return this week and one of the highlights of this latest round of matches is Argentina hosting Chile at Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires.
The reigning world and South American champions are clear favourites to win with the oddsmakers and were victorious when these sides last met, Lautaro Martinez scoring a late winner in a 1-0 triumph in the Copa America group stage.
Lionel Scaloni's side sit comfortably top of the CONMEBOL standings, with five wins from their first six games putting them in a strong position to qualify for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada. Chile, meanwhile, are facing a battle to join them at the expanded finals, having taken only five points from six matches. Only Bolivia and Peru are below them in the 10-team standings.
Argentina vs. Chile Prediction
Even without Lionel Messi, Argentina are logical favourites to win against a struggling Chilean side. With that in mind, it makes sense to add different selections to find more appealing odds.
Argentina to win to nil is priced at -105 with BetMGM, which is a better option than simply backing a home victory.
Similarly, there could be value in backing a low-scoring game: the Albiceleste have failed to score more than once in their past two home games against Chile in World Cup qualifying, and they didn't manage to do so in their most recent Copa America clash.
Argentina only conceded one goal at the Copa America — in the 1-1 quarterfinal draw with Ecuador — and won each of their other six matches. Likewise, in World Cup qualifying, all five of their wins to date have come without allowing their opponents a goal.
Chile, meanwhile, have only scored three times in 2026 World Cup qualifiers and failed to find the net once at the Copa America. This feels like an easy selection.

Argentina Dominate Chile in CONMEBOL World Cup Qualifying
Argentina avoided a Copa America hangover in their first match since claiming the 2024 trophy, defeating Chile in World Cup Qualifying 3-0 Thursday night. Goals from Alexis Mac Allister, Julian Alvarez and Paulo Dybala sealed all three points in an emphatic victory.
Ahead of the contest, La Albiceleste, all the fans in attendance and those around the world watched as Argentina paid tribute and goodbye to legend Angel Di Maria. The dynamic winger announced his international retirement after winning Copa, and with his family by his side, he gave a emotional speech in front of a sold-out crowd, with flashlights from cell phones beaming from the stands and cheers echoing from around the ground.
The sentiment set the tone for the match, as La Albiceleste had more to play for than just points in 2026 World Cup Qualifying - they owed their friend, teammate and legend a performance to remember.
After a dynamic and contentious first 45 minutes, the two sides went into halftime scoreless. However, Lionel Scaloni's side came out of the break with intensity. Just three minutes into the second half, Mac Allister fired home to give them a 1-0 lead off an Alvarez assist.
The story of the final 45 wasn't the Liverpool midfielder, rather it was Alvarez, who energized the big stage. The Man City striker looked comfortable in a front-two, and his moment arrived in the 84th minute. He received the ball on the top of the box, hit a lovely turn and fired a rocket of an effort, with the ball going bar-down into the back of the net to double their lead late.
Argentina vs. Chile Match Recap
The match ends with an emphatic victory for Argentina, as Chile just could not stick with the World Cup champions for the full 90 minutes. In truth, we knew it was over for some time. Argentina failed to create much in the first 45 minutes, but they had plenty of attacking intent and it felt like they would break through eventually if things remained.
They improved significantly in the second half, and punished Chile for their lack of desire to see the ball in play. Once the referee made it clear he would not stand for their time-wasting, they had few other ideas to reach 90 minutes unscathed.
Argentina dominated throughout the second half as they added two more goals to put the match away. First, Alvarez scored an absolutely stunning goal from outside the penalty area in the 84th minute that hit the underside of the crossbar before finding the back of the net. The second goal came in stoppage time when Paulo Dybala, wearing Lionel Messi's No. 10, came off the bench and scored a goal to seal the 3-0 victory.
Argentina Player Ratings
GOAL rates Argentina's players from Estadio Mas Monumental.
- Emiliano Martinez (GK): 7/10 - Martinez made a handful of important saves during the match. He was particularly strong in the first half when Chile tried to build some early momentum, and he didn't have to do much during the second half when Argentina took complete control.
- Nahuel Molina (RB): 7/10 - Molina was a force down the right flank, and he was a constant threat going forward. He provided a good cross in the 10th minute for Julian Alvarez but the Chile defender managed to clear the ball away. Molina was also good defensively, and he helped to shut down the left side for Chile in the second half.
- Cristian Romero (CB): 7/10 - Romero, who had a great Copa America with Argentina, was a force in the second half and helped to shut down Chile's attack.
- Nicolas Otamendi (CB): 8/10 - Otamendi was the captain on the night, and he was the rock of the back line. He didn't put a foot wrong. He helped to stop a Chile counterattack when he put in a last-second sliding block to stop a one-on-one shot on target from reaching Emiliano Martinez.
- Lisandro Martinez (CB): 7/10 - Martinez also played well, and he was a key part of Argentina's dominance in the second half.
- Rodrigo De Paul (CM): 7/10 - De Paul was a key player for Argentina, and he controlled the midfield throughout the match. He forced a big save from the Chile goalkeeper, and his shot was barely clipped out of play by the head of Matias Catalan before it could reach Gabriel Arias's goal.
- Alexis Mac Allister (CM): 8/10 - Mac Allister scored the opening goal in the second half after a brilliant dummy by Lautaro Martinez. He also had a number of other key moments, and he was one of the standout players in the match.
- Enzo Fernandez (CM): 7/10 - Fernandez was very active, and he was involved in a lot of the play, but he wasn't as productive as the other players.
- Julian Alvarez (ST): 9/10 - Alvarez was the hero of the match, and he was the reason that Argentina was able to get on top of Chile. His goal in the 84th minute was a beautiful strike from outside the penalty area and is a strong contender for goal of the year for the Albiceleste. He was a constant threat throughout the match, and he was instrumental in the win.
- Lautaro Martinez (ST): 7/10 - Martinez was a handful for the Chile defense, but he wasn't able to score. His dummy to set up Mac Allister's goal was a wonderful play.
- Nico Gonzalez (ST): 6/10 - Gonzalez was the other starter up front for Argentina, but he didn't have as much impact as Alvarez or Martinez.
- Paulo Dybala (Sub): 7/10 - Dybala was a late substitute, but he made a big impact, scoring a goal in stoppage time.
- Alejandro Garnacho (Sub): 6/10 - Garnacho also came on as a substitute, and he looked dangerous but wasn't able to find the back of the net.
- Marcos Acuna (Sub): 6/10 - Acuna replaced Lisandro Martinez in the second half.
- Gio Lo Celso (Sub): 6/10 - Lo Celso was also a late substitute, and he helped to control the midfield in the second half.
- Taty Castellanos (Sub): 5/10 - Castellanos made his Argentina debut in the second half but wasn't able to make much of an impact.
Occasionally, though, it's nice to have fun while doing it.
Looking ahead
Argentina will be looking to continue their winning ways next Tuesday, September 10 when they travel to Barranquilla, Colombia to take on Los Cafeteros.
