Newcastle United weathered a second-half storm from visiting Tottenham Hotspur to secure a 2-1 Premier League win in an entertaining game at St James’ Park on Sunday.
Harvey Barnes’ first-half opener for Newcastle was cancelled out by a Dan Burn own goal after the break as Spurs dominated the chances in the second period but spurned numerous openings and were beaten by a lightning-quick break from the hosts.
Joelinton’s defence-splitting pass was perfect for Jacob Murphy who, after drawing out keeper Guglielmo Vicario, laid the ball on a plate for Isak to secure the three points for manager Eddie Howe’s side, who remain unbeaten at home since January.
Adding to Newcastle’s delight, their Italian midfielder Sandro Tonali made his first league appearance since being handed a 10-month ban for a breach of betting rules and received a rapturous reception from the home supporters.
Newcastle Dominate Early On
Newcastle United dominated the first half and deservedly took the lead in the 37th minute. Lloyd Kelly delivered a pinpoint cross from the left, finding Harvey Barnes who side-footed home from the center of the box. Barnes, who scored in his previous Premier League start, was a constant threat throughout the first half and gave the Spurs defense a torrid time. However, Tottenham came into the second half with renewed purpose and almost drew level in the 54th minute when a deflected cross from Brennan Johnson landed right in front of Wilson Odobert, who unbelievably fired over from close range.
Spurs Pressure Mounts in the Second Half
The visitors continued to apply pressure, with the likes of James Maddison, Son Heung-min and Kulusevski looking dangerous. Their pressure paid off in the 56th minute when a miscommunication between Nick Pope and Dan Burn led to a comical own goal that brought Tottenham back into the game.
Despite dominating possession and creating a plethora of chances, Spurs struggled to find a way past the stubborn Newcastle defense. The home side continued to look dangerous on the counter-attack, and they eventually got the winning goal in the 78th minute.
A Late Goal Seals the Victory for Newcastle
Jacob Murphy was played in on the left wing by Joelinton and, with composure, laid the ball across the six-yard box for Alexander Isak to tap in the winning goal. It was a deserved victory for Newcastle, who showed great resilience in the face of sustained pressure from Tottenham. This win means the Magpies are now seven points from nine in a promising start to the season.
Newcastle’s Tonali Makes a Successful Return
The game also marked the return of Sandro Tonali, who came on as a substitute in the 67th minute. Tonali had been serving a 10-month ban for a breach of betting regulations but was met with a warm reception by the Newcastle fans. His return is a welcome boost for Eddie Howe’s side, who will be hoping he can help them to achieve their lofty ambitions.
Tottenham’s Frustrations Grow
It was a disappointing afternoon for Spurs, who were unable to turn their dominance into goals. They spurned multiple golden opportunities, and their inability to convert their chances ultimately cost them the game. This result means Tottenham now sit 10th in the table, four points behind their opponents.
What’s Next for Newcastle and Tottenham?
Newcastle will now look to continue their impressive start to the season when they travel to Fulham next weekend. Tottenham, meanwhile, will be hoping to bounce back from this defeat when they host Brighton at home.
