Arsenal Legend Jens Lehmann Arrested for Drink Driving After Oktoberfest
Former Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann was stopped on suspicion of drink driving after attending Oktoberfest in Lederhosen. The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday morning after Lehmann left the world-famous beer festival in Munich.
According to German publication Bild, Lehmann was staggering and smelled of alcohol when police intervened. The former German international was unable to complete breath tests and had his driver's license confiscated. He was taken to the police station for further tests.
Lehmann's Oktoberfest Partying
Lehmann was pictured at the beer festival on Sunday, where he was seen drinking several steins of beer with friends and dancing on benches in the Schützenfest tent. He was reportedly wearing traditional Bavarian dress, including the iconic Lederhosen.
Previous Incidents
This is not the first time Lehmann has been involved in a public incident. He has previously been disciplined for attending Oktoberfest without permission, fined for chainsawing his neighbor's garage roof, and was sacked by Hertha Berlin for sending a racist text message.
Lehmann's Statement
Speaking to Bild, Lehmann said: ‘I can’t say anything about it at the moment.’
Police Investigation
Senior public prosecutor Anne Leiding told The Sun: ‘Mr. Lehmann was subjected to a police check on September 23, 2024 at around 1.30 a.m. due to his unusual driving behavior in a car in the inner city area of Munich. The police are said to have noticed a clear smell of alcohol and an unsafe manner. A breath alcohol test did not produce any usable results, whereupon a blood sample was ordered and the driver’s licence was confiscated. Our investigations are still pending. Suspicions of drunk driving continue.’
A Regular at Oktoberfest
Lehmann is known to be a regular at Oktoberfest and has been pictured with former teammate Sol Campbell and ex-Chelsea striker Didier Drogba in previous years. The 54-year-old played for Arsenal between 2003 and 2008 and also featured for the likes of Shalke and Borussia Dortmund.
A Celebrated Goalkeeper
Lehmann is best known for his time at Arsenal, where he was the goalkeeper for the club's famous Invincibles side that won the Premier League in 2003-04 without losing a single game. He also played for Germany in the 2006 World Cup, where he came third.
Lehmann's Future Uncertain
It remains to be seen what impact this latest incident will have on Lehmann's future. He has been involved in a number of controversies in recent years, and it seems his days of playing professional football are behind him. But he is still a popular figure in the world of football, and it is likely that he will continue to be involved in the game in some capacity.
