Atsuko Tanaka, the Japanese voice actress known for voicing iconic characters such as Ghost in the Shell's Motoko Kusanagi, has passed away at age 61. The news was shared by her son, Hikaru Tanaka, also a voice actor, on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter). He revealed that Tanaka had been battling an undisclosed illness for about a year.

Hikaru Tanaka's heartfelt message expressed gratitude to Tanaka's fans and those in the industry who supported her. He described his mother as a strong, dignified, and playful individual, true to herself until the end. He asked that people remember her for the characters she brought to life and the love she poured into her work.

A Voice Across Anime and Games

Tanaka's career spanned over three decades, with a voice that resonated with fans across various media. Her iconic role as Motoko Kusanagi in the Ghost in the Shell franchise cemented her place in anime history. Her performance as the intelligent and enigmatic Major Kusanagi left a lasting impression, capturing the character's essence of quiet power and charisma.

Beyond Ghost in the Shell, Tanaka's voice graced countless other anime series. She played Medea in Fate/stay night, Lisa Lisa in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Karura in Utawarerumono, and Bayonetta in PlatinumGames' titular series. She also lent her voice to video games, notably as Kaine in Nier Replicant, Hanami in Jujutsu Kaisen, and Silene in Devilman Crybaby.

Her talent extended to dubbing roles for Hollywood stars as well, including Nicole Kidman, Rachel Weisz, and Jennifer Lopez.

The anime community mourned Tanaka's loss, with tributes flooding social media from fellow voice actors, studios, and fans alike. Ghost in the Shell's official Instagram account acknowledged her significant contribution to the franchise.

"Atsuko Tanaka, who played the role of Major Motoko Kusanagi in the 'Ghost in the Shell' anime series, has passed away. Since the release of the original 'GHOST IN THE SHELL' in 1995, Tanaka brought the unique and powerful character of Major to life with a serene and commanding presence."

The tribute continued, "We express our deepest gratitude for her immense contribution and offer our sincere condolences."

Other franchises Tanaka was a part of also expressed their condolences. Nier's Twitter account stated:

"I had a great time playing the role of Kaine in Nier Replicant. We sincerely pray for the repose of your soul."

And from Frieren: "We would like to once again express our gratitude for your appearance in Funeral Parlor Frieren and your performance, and we offer our heartfelt condolences."
