With open-net pen salmon aquaculture set to be banned in British Columbia coastal waters by June 30, 2029, the Canadian government is looking at alternatives. This week Sophie Chatel, Member of Parliament for Pontiac, announced on behalf of the Honourable Soraya Martinez Ferrada, Minister of Tourism and Minister responsible for CED (Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions), a repayable contribution of $99,998 for Samonix Inc.

Samonix was founded in 2020 with the goal of growing land-based aquaculture of Atlantic salmon. The company purchased land in Litchfield, Quebec, on the shores of the Ottawa River. The company is building a 12,000-metric-ton (MT) land-based salmon farm that will use a recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) with AquaMaof technology.

Samonix’s facility will recirculate 99% of its water. This will greatly reduce the environmental impact of salmon farming, which is a major concern for many environmentalists. The company plans to supply salmon to Quebec, Ontario, and northern U.S. states.

The investment from CED builds upon other partnerships Samonix has secured with prominent salmon aquaculture companies. In January, Smart Salmon Group – alongside Smøgenlax – announced a major strategic partnership with Samonix. Smart Salmon Group is a land-based salmon-farming company with projects in Norway and France.

The partnership with Smart Salmon and Smøgenlax is a major boost for Samonix. It gives the company access to the expertise and experience of two leading salmon farming companies. The partnership will also help Samonix to scale up its operations and to develop new technologies.

The investment from CED is a sign that the Canadian government is committed to supporting the development of sustainable salmon aquaculture. The government is also providing funding to other land-based salmon farming startups in Canada.

Land-based salmon farming is a growing industry in Canada. It is seen as a more sustainable alternative to open-net pen salmon farming, which can have a negative impact on the environment. Land-based salmon farms are also able to produce salmon year-round, which makes them less vulnerable to the effects of climate change.

Samonix is a promising land-based salmon farming startup. The company has a strong team, a proven technology, and a clear vision for the future. With the support of the Canadian government and its partners, Samonix has the potential to become a leading producer of sustainable salmon in Canada.

The Rise of Land-Based Salmon Farming

The rise of land-based salmon farming is a response to the growing concerns about the environmental impact of open-net pen salmon farming. Open-net pen salmon farms can have a negative impact on the environment in a number of ways. They can release waste into the surrounding waters, which can pollute the water and harm marine life. They can also escape into the wild, where they can compete with wild salmon for food and habitat.

Land-based salmon farms are designed to address these concerns. They are located on land, which means that they do not release waste into the surrounding waters. They also have a lower risk of escape, because the fish are contained in a closed system. As a result, land-based salmon farming is seen as a more sustainable alternative to open-net pen salmon farming.

The Future of Salmon Farming

The future of salmon farming is bright. The demand for salmon is growing, and land-based salmon farming is a sustainable way to meet that demand. The Canadian government is committed to supporting the development of this industry, and a number of companies are investing in land-based salmon farming projects. With continued innovation and investment, land-based salmon farming has the potential to become a major industry in Canada.

Land-based salmon farming is a promising solution to the challenges facing the salmon aquaculture industry. It is a sustainable, environmentally friendly way to produce high-quality salmon. With continued support from the government and the private sector, land-based salmon farming has the potential to become a major force in the global salmon market.
