Police in Sydney have dismantled a freelance 'muscle for hire' gang, dealing a significant blow to organized crime in the state. The group was involved in a string of violent incidents, including shootings, home invasions, and kidnappings, and was hired by organized criminal networks to carry out their dirty work.
In July, detectives from the State Crime Command's Criminal Groups Squad established Strike Force Currambene to investigate these organized criminal acts. The investigation focused on a series of high-profile incidents, including an alleged shooting in a public place at Austral on July 25 and a home invasion and kidnapping at Edmonson Park on August 14.
Following a comprehensive investigation, police executed multiple search warrants at homes in Fairfield West, Sadlier, Lakemba, Mt Druitt, and St Clair. During these searches, detectives seized a cache of evidence, including ketamine, electronic devices, knives, other weapons, cash, and items believed to have been stolen during the home invasion and kidnapping.
Three men were apprehended in connection with the operation: two 20-year-old men from Fairfield West and Mt Druitt and an 18-year-old man from Lakemba. Detectives allege that the Fairfield West man led the gang and took on tasks from organized crime networks, including shootings and kidnappings.
The three suspects were arrested on Wednesday and charged with participating in a criminal group. The Fairfield West man faces additional charges of aggravated breaking and entering while armed with a dangerous weapon and kidnapping with intent to cause serious bodily harm. The Lakemba man is facing charges of drug supply and dealing with the proceeds of crime.
All three were denied bail and appeared in court on Wednesday.
Operation's Impact on Organized Crime
Detective Superintendent Jason Box, who led the investigation, emphasized the significance of this bust for curbing organized crime in NSW. He described the dismantling of the gang as a “major blow” to criminal activity in the state.
“No one should think they can commit these serious offenses, such as shooting and kidnapping, and avoid any consequences for their actions,” Detective Superintendent Box said. “We will continue to target these gangs, syndicates, and groups and hold them accountable for these dangerous violent acts.”
Addressing the Root of the Problem
The arrest of this 'muscle for hire' gang highlights the need for a multi-pronged approach to combatting organized crime. While apprehending those directly involved in violent crimes is essential, authorities must also focus on dismantling the networks that hire and empower such gangs.
This case serves as a reminder that organized crime operates in a complex and interconnected web. By targeting not only the individuals carrying out violent acts but also the networks that orchestrate them, law enforcement can make a more significant and lasting impact.
Bringing Justice to the Victims
The impact of these criminal activities extends far beyond the arrests. The victims of shootings, home invasions, and kidnappings often endure lasting trauma.
The successful prosecution of the alleged gang members is crucial for holding them accountable for their actions and providing some measure of justice for the victims.
A Continued Fight
This case is just one example of the ongoing battle against organized crime in Sydney and other parts of the world.
While police have made significant progress in dismantling this 'muscle for hire' gang, the fight against organized crime is far from over. Authorities must remain vigilant in their efforts to disrupt criminal networks, protect communities, and bring perpetrators to justice.
