CAO Offers 2024: 60% Get Their First Choice, But Random Selection Looms for Competitive Courses

It's a nerve-wracking time for students and parents alike. The Leaving Cert exams are done, but the big question remains: do you have a college place? The answer for many will arrive this afternoon as the CAO releases its Round One offers.

The good news? Close to 60 per cent of CAO applicants are expected to secure their first-choice college place this year, while up to 85 per cent are likely to receive one of their top-three preferences.

However, the not-so-good news is that random selection will be employed for some highly sought-after courses, including medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, business, management, engineering, and others, according to higher education sources. This means that even if a student meets the minimum CAO points for a course, there's no guarantee of a place. A computer will randomly choose those who get in from those who tied on the minimum points.

Understanding the CAO Process

The Central Applications Office (CAO) is the central body responsible for managing applications to undergraduate courses in Irish universities and colleges. Students apply for their desired courses through the CAO system, listing them in order of preference.

Round One Offers:

Today marks the release of Round One offers, the first step in the CAO application process. Applicants can access their offers and the cut-off points on the CAO website from 2 pm.

More than 83,500 students have applied this year, with many receiving their offers via text or email, depending on their preference. Applicants have until 3 pm on Tuesday, 3 September to accept their offers, with Round Two offers being released on September 9.

Accepting Offers: What to Consider

So, what should students do when they receive a college offer?

Brian Mooney, a guidance counsellor, offers valuable advice. If an applicant receives an offer for their first-choice course, it is the only offer from that list they will receive. However, if they get an offer for a lower preference course, they may still be eligible for a higher preference course later. This depends on the number of acceptances received by colleges and can happen up to mid-October. However, this applies to a very small volume of courses.

Finding Accommodation: A New Challenge

Once the college offer is secured, a new challenge arises for many students: finding accommodation. The soaring cost of living and the ongoing housing crisis mean finding a place to live can be a stressful process.

The Rising Cost of Accommodation

Katie Mellett, a journalist, has put together a helpful guide to the cost of accommodation across Irish universities. The findings are unsurprising: rental costs are skyrocketing.

The most expensive accommodation can be found at UCD's Roebuck Castle, where a catered, en-suite apartment costs a whopping €12,063.55 for the 2024/25 academic year.

Navigating the Offers: A Word of Encouragement

Eileen Keleghan, Head of Communications with the CAO, assures students that there are options available if they are disappointed with their Round One offer.

For those who don't receive a place in their desired course, the CAO offers a range of alternative pathways. This might include exploring courses at other colleges, considering a different program altogether, or taking a year out to gain work experience before applying again.

While the CAO application process can be daunting, it's important to remember that there's always a way forward. The key is to stay informed, seek guidance, and make decisions that align with your long-term goals.

A Time for Decision

As students eagerly await their Round One offers, one thing is certain: today marks a crucial step in their journey towards higher education. The choices made today will shape their future paths and lay the foundation for their academic and professional lives.

It's a time for careful consideration, informed decision-making, and a dash of hope as the next chapter unfolds.
