The Bunbeg Coast Guard was tasked earlier this evening by the Main Head Coastguard following reports from members of the public of a kayaker in distress west of Bloody Foreland Point. The boat team carried out a detailed search of the area whilst the drone team and members of our shore team searched the coastline. Following an extensive search, it was determined that nobody was in need of assistance and all resources were stood down.
Coast Guard Assists Powerboat in Difficulty
While returning to station the boat team was re-tasked, this time to assist a small powerboat in difficulty close to Gola Island. The boat team arrived on scene within minutes, before towing the vessel back to Bunbeg Harbour.
Bunbeg Team's Busy 24 Hours
This was the Bunbeg team's third tasking in the past 24 hours. A spokesperson added “We’d like to take this opportunity to remind the public of the importance of calling the Coast Guard if they believe someone is in danger. Never assume someone else has, dial 999 or 112 and ask for the Coast Guard.”
Importance of Reporting Distressed Vessels
The Bunbeg Coast Guard's recent experiences highlight the critical importance of reporting any potential incidents at sea. Timely and accurate information allows the Coast Guard to quickly assess the situation and dispatch the appropriate resources to provide assistance. The public's vigilance and prompt reporting are crucial to ensuring the safety of those at sea.
Sea Safety Tips for Kayakers
Kayaking can be a rewarding and enjoyable activity, but it's essential to prioritize safety. Here are some tips to keep in mind when kayaking:
-
Check the weather forecast before heading out. Be aware of wind and wave conditions and avoid kayaking in unfavorable weather.
-
Inform someone of your kayaking plans. Share your intended route and estimated return time with a friend or family member.
-
Wear a properly fitted life jacket. This is essential for your safety in case of an emergency.
-
Carry a signaling device. A whistle or a handheld flares can be helpful for attracting attention if you need assistance.
-
Be mindful of your surroundings. Pay attention to your surroundings and be aware of potential hazards.
-
Never kayak alone. It's always safer to kayak with a partner or in a group.
By following these safety tips, kayakers can enjoy their time on the water while minimizing the risk of an incident.
Remember, if you ever find yourself or someone else in danger at sea, don't hesitate to contact the Coast Guard. Your safety and the safety of others is paramount.
