The Commanders announced a pair of elevations from the practice squad ahead of Monday night’s game against the Bengals. Defensive end Andre Jones Jr. and cornerback Bobby Price have been called up. They’ll both revert back to the practice squad after the game.
It's gameday and the Washington Commanders are set to face the Cincinnati Bengals on the Week 3 edition of Monday Night Football. Ahead of Monday night, the Commanders elevated two players from the practice squad: Cornerback Bobby Price and defensive end Andre Jones Jr.
Jones was a seventh-round pick last year and he had four tackles in 14 appearances during his rookie season. The Commanders ruled Clelin Ferrell out with a knee injury, so Jones gives them more depth up front. Price played eight special teams snaps in Washington’s Week Two win over the Giants. Cornerback Emmanuel Forbes is questionable to play after having thumb surgery last weekend.
Price, 26, was signed to the practice squad after the initial 53-man roster was finalized. The Commanders elevated Price to the gameday roster before last week's game against the New York Giants. He did not play on defense, but did participate in eight snaps on specials teams. Price's ascension gives Washington depth, with cornerback Emmanuel Forbes likely out another week.
Jones, a seventh-round pick in 2023, will see his first action of the season. Starting defensive end Clelin Ferrell, who also leads the Commanders in sacks (two), is out with a knee injury. Former first-round pick Jamin Davis should see increased snaps at edge rusher against the Bengals after not playing last week.
A Local Hero
LANDOVER, MD (WTKR)- Bobby Price has run out of NFL tunnels before, but Sunday was a little bit different. This time he was home.
“It was a dream come true,” Price said. “I've been working my butt off, got claimed here, hometown kid, so it was an opportunity and I just ran with it.”
Price, a Virginia Beach native, made his Commanders debut Sunday when Washington hosted the Giants at Northwest Stadium. He was signed to the team's practice squad, but elevated to the active roster Saturday night. After spending last season across the country with Arizona, he's now on the field within spitting distance of where he grew up.
“Being on the field pregame, going against the New York Giants, being back home, being in this stadium, having my parents watching me, it's an amazing feeling,” he smiled.
Price is one of a handful of names playing in the NFL with Hampton Roads ties. A Catholic and Norfolk State alumnus, he's putting in his dues hoping to stick around Washington for awhile. Who knows? Maybe someday soon kids in Virginia Beach will be wearing his jersey.
“It doesn't matter where you're from what school you went to, you can be here just like I am,” he said. “It's just one step at a time.”
While he's taking it one step at a time towards a big goal, he's also making sure to take in the moment as he represents his town, schools and himself right up the road from home.
“It means the world to me,” Price remarked. “Not a whole lot of guys come from my area, so to be one of those guys, it means the world to me.”
And for a Virginia native, Price has to be suiting up for his childhood favorite team, right?
“I actually grew up a Giants' fan, ironically,” he smiled. “Hey, we got the 'W' today. I'm a Commanders fan now.”
A Look at Price's Journey
Price began his career in 2020 as an undrafted free agent with the Lions. Washington marks the third team of his professional career. Price, 26, signed on with the Lions as an undrafted free agent out of Norfolk State back in April of 2020. He was released coming out of training camp and was on and off their practice squad before being promoted to their active roster.
Price became an unrestricted free agent after signing an exclusive rights contract with the Lions and caught on with the Cardinals. He signed with the Commanders ahead of the 2024 season but was among their final roster cuts and brought back to the practice squad.
In 2024, Price has appeared in one game for the Commanders and recorded no statistics.
Are the Commanders Ready for Primetime?
The Commanders need all the help they can get this season if they want to make a run to the playoffs. With both players getting called up to the active roster, the Commanders will be looking to these players to step up and make a difference. The question is whether they'll be able to make a difference on Monday night. The Bengals are a tough opponent, and it will be interesting to see how the Commanders fare against them.
