Former Coronation Street actress Nicola Thorp shared her harrowing experience of being stalked on Friday's episode of Good Morning Britain. The 35-year-old, known for her role as Nicola Rubinstein from 2017 to 2019, discussed the frightening events leading up to a significant court decision regarding police response to stalking incidents.
Nicola recounted the mixed emotions she felt upon learning of her stalker's arrest: "You'd think it would be a happy day when the police called me and said: 'We've arrested him, we've found him.' I was, I was elated, I said: 'Who is it? Who is this man? ' and they said: 'We can't tell you! '"
Nicola expressed her frustration and concern: "It was very disturbing to me that I didn't know what this man looked like, I didn't know his name, I didn't know where he lived. I begged the police for months and months to just tell me, give me some information.
"The most important thing for me was I wanted to know how tall he was, I wanted to know how much of a physical threat he could be and nothing for months until they eventually showed me a photograph, very fleetingly, of what he looked like.
"I actually had to go to court to find out what his name was so that, I think psychologically, was difficult because he then became everyone that I met."
Throughout a harrowing two-year saga, Nicola's stalker assumed 25 different identities to hound the actress. Last year, at East London's Snaresbrook Crown Court, he was given a jail sentence of 30 months.
The Impact of Stalking on Victims
Nicola's experience highlights the devastating impact of stalking on its victims. "90% of victims suffer psychological issues," she stated, emphasizing the widespread emotional distress caused by such crimes. The fear and uncertainty she endured underscore the need for improved police response and support systems for victims.
Police Response and Victim Support
The police's initial reluctance to disclose the identity of the stalker, despite Nicola's repeated requests, raises concerns about their handling of stalking cases. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of providing victims with timely access to crucial information and support. Organizations like the Suzy Lamplugh Trust offer valuable resources and a national stalking helpline (0808 802 0300) for those in need.
A Call for Change
Nicola's harrowing ordeal underscores the need for a systemic shift in how stalking is treated by authorities. Increased awareness, improved training for law enforcement, and more robust support systems for victims are crucial in addressing this prevalent issue and protecting individuals from the devastating consequences of stalking.
Moving Forward
While Nicola's stalker has been brought to justice, her story serves as a potent reminder of the enduring scars of stalking and the need for a more comprehensive response to ensure the safety and well-being of victims. By raising awareness and advocating for change, we can create a safer environment for individuals facing this insidious form of abuse.
