A desperate search is underway for a missing man believed to have fallen into Dovestone Reservoir on Sunday afternoon (20 October). Emergency services were called to reports of two people going into the water at around 14:30BST. One person, believed to be a woman in her late 20s, was pulled from the reservoir and has been treated by paramedics. Oldham Police confirmed they were still searching for a man who had also gone into the water, and expect to remain at the scene through the night. People are being asked to avoid the popular walking spot, with roads nearby shut off.

The incident unfolded on the afternoon of Sunday, October 20, when two individuals, believed to be a couple in their late 20s, were paddleboarding on Dovestone Reservoir. The couple reportedly fell into the water, and while the woman was successfully rescued and treated for hypothermia and shock, the man remains missing.

The search operation has mobilized a significant response from emergency services, including Greater Manchester Police, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, North West Ambulance Service, North West Air Ambulance, Coastguard, and Mountain Rescue. Underwater teams were deployed to scour the reservoir, and the search effort is expected to continue throughout the night.

Dovestone Reservoir, a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts, is located on the edge of Oldham and the Peak District National Park. The incident has prompted a somber atmosphere in the area, with local residents expressing concern for the missing man. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with water activities, even in seemingly tranquil environments.

Emergency Services Response

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) confirmed that the scene will remain in place overnight, with officers urging people to stay away from the search area. GMP emphasized their commitment to the search, stating, “We are not stopping our search and are doing everything we can to locate the missing man.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) reported that three fire engines from Mossley, Stalybridge, and Eccles, along with the Water Incident Unit from Leigh, were dispatched to the scene. GMFRS crews are working collaboratively with other emergency service personnel and remain on site.

Public Safety Concerns

The incident has highlighted the importance of safety measures when engaging in water activities. Authorities are urging the public to exercise caution and adhere to safety guidelines. Paddleboarding and other water sports should be undertaken with appropriate safety equipment, and participants should be mindful of weather conditions and water currents. Dovestone Reservoir, like many other bodies of water, can be unpredictable, even on seemingly calm days. It's essential to prioritize safety and seek guidance from qualified instructors or local authorities before embarking on any water-based activities.

Dovestone Reservoir: A Beautiful but Unforgiving Place

The reservoir provides a tranquil backdrop for hiking, walking, and enjoying the natural beauty of the area. However, it's important to remember that the reservoir can also be a dangerous place, with unpredictable water conditions and cold temperatures. The incident serves as a reminder of the need to be prepared and prioritize safety when visiting any body of water.
