Nestled in the glorious green hills in the shadow of Lake Windermere, it is not hard to imagine how Lindeth Howe provided a source of literary inspiration for Beatrix Potter. Originally built in 1879 as a holiday home for a Mancunian mill owner, the famed children's writer had already written the Tale of Peter Rabbit by the time she bought the sprawling Victorian mansion in the Lake District. Having previously stayed for holidays when Lindeth Howe was rented out by its owners, the huge property provided a retreat for her to compile some of her later works.
A Literary Oasis
Potter's influence is there to see throughout the building, which has been expanded and is now a four star hotel with more than 30 bedrooms. Lindeth Howe is so hidden away from the craziness of Bowness's pier, that to the uninitiated, it can be hard to find at first. A five minute drive or a 25 minute walk away from the lake, the hotel provides an oasis of calm to recharge the batteries after a long day taking in the beauty of the surrounding area.
A Step Back in Time
As soon as you walk into the hotel through the huge wooden door, the Potter references are there to see. Pictures of Peter Rabbit on the wall, and framed letters sent by Potter, the hotel is rightly proud and celebratory of its past. In more recent times the hotel has been expanded and renovated to encompass 34 rooms. I stayed in a stunning dual aspect room, offering stunning views out onto Lake Windermere and onto the hotel's garden below. Sadly the Lake District's somewhat mixed climate did not allow for a greater exploration of the hotel gardens, but on a summer's day it would be the perfect place to get away from it all. The hotel is very popular with wedding parties, and the garden also provides a great space to capture the day with some stunning photographs.
Modern Comfort Meets Literary Heritage
With a number of stylishly decorated sitting rooms, bringing a modern take with a nature inspired aesthetic, there are several places to enjoy a quiet drink before or after dinner. Moving into the large dining hall, which has a great view onto the gardens, the food lives up to expectations. I opted for the leek and potato soup to start (£8.95), followed by the chicken supreme (£26.95) featuring turnip dauphinoise potato and sumptuous pieces of chicken finished off with a red wine jus. And a scrumptiously sticky toffee pudding (£11.95) finishes off the meal perfectly. The service is excellent, with staff polite and friendly.
A Culinary Journey
A hearty breakfast is available in the morning, with a cereal and fruit buffet with a full Cumbrian breakfast on offer for those needing to fill up before a day of walking. For those wanting to see the Lake District in style, Lindeth Howe is a great base to visit Windermere, with Ambleside, Grasmere or Keswick just down the road.
A Tranquil Escape
With its homely and cosy feel, the hotel provides a sense of tranquillity away from the hustle and bustle of the town. Andrew was a guest at Lindeth Howe, Longtail Hill, Bowness-on-Windermere, Cumbria, LA23 3JF. Standard room prices start from £139. Windermere is accessible by public transport from Manchester Piccadilly, with services taking about two hours. The hotel is a ten minute drive from the station. Whether you're seeking literary inspiration, a romantic getaway, or simply a tranquil escape, Lindeth Howe offers a unique blend of history, comfort, and natural beauty that will leave a lasting impression.
