Eve Hewson, the Irish actor and daughter of U2 frontman Bono, has shared her perspective on cancel culture and its impact on young women in Hollywood. In a recent interview with Porter magazine, Hewson, 33, asserted that cancel culture has empowered women to speak out against their experiences, particularly in the entertainment industry.

Hewson highlighted a significant shift in the landscape of Hollywood, suggesting that women are now "allowed" to voice their "bad experiences." This shift, she argues, contrasts with the previous sentiment of "be grateful, don’t complain."

She explained, "What has changed is that you’re allowed to now say that you had a bad experience. Before it was, ‘Be grateful, don’t complain, this is what it’s like if you want to be a star’. At least now, even if people want to or not, they kind of have to respond, or they get cancelled. It gives us power."

This observation reflects a broader conversation about accountability and the rise of online movements that hold individuals and institutions accountable for their actions.

Eve Hewson's Upcoming Projects

Beyond her reflections on cancel culture, Hewson is currently gearing up for the release of several upcoming projects. She is set to star in Netflix's thriller, "The Perfect Couple." Hewson will play Amelia, a free-spirited bride-to-be who marries into a wealthy family.

However, the night before her wedding, her best friend is found dead, making everyone a potential suspect.

The series also features Nicole Kidman and Dakota Fanning and is directed by Elin Hilderbrand.

Hewson shared her excitement about the project, calling it "a blast, like being at summer camp." She added, "You don’t usually have so many people on set your own age."

In addition to "The Perfect Couple," Hewson is slated to appear in an unnamed Netflix movie directed by Noah Baumbach. The film boasts a star-studded cast including George Clooney, Greta Gerwig, Isla Fisher, Adam Sandler, and Billy Cruddup.

Hewson revealed that neither she nor her fellow actors have been given access to the entire script, with Baumbach only providing their respective scenes.

She expressed, "I haven’t read the script. He only gave us our scenes. It’s actually kind of cool. The characters sort of live in their own world. They all relate to George Clooney. But no-one really sees each other."

The Hewson Family Band

Hewson also discussed her family, particularly her brother Elijah, the lead singer of the Irish rock band Inhaler. While Hewson initially entertained a music career, she eventually pursued acting, noting it was "the only thing I was good at."

During the lockdown, the entire Hewson family relocated to Dublin and formed their own family band. Hewson shared, "We have a studio at the end of [my parents’] garden, where [we] usually end up, in the middle of the night, writing stupid songs. I actually got kicked out of the family band, for being too enthusiastic."

Hewson humorously added that her father, Bono, was not part of the band due to his early bedtime.

Addressing Nepotism

Hewson acknowledged the potential for nepotism, jokingly stating, "2023 Goals: be successful enough to get recognised as a nepo baby."

Her comments reflect the ongoing dialogue about privilege and the role of family connections in the entertainment industry.

"The Perfect Couple" is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on September 5th.

The Future of Hollywood

Eve Hewson's insights into cancel culture and her upcoming projects offer a glimpse into the evolving landscape of Hollywood. Her observations about the empowering effects of cancel culture for young women in Hollywood raise important questions about accountability, transparency, and the potential for positive change within the industry.

As Hewson continues her successful career, it will be interesting to see how she navigates these evolving dynamics and the impact she continues to have on the world of entertainment.
