Fremantle's finals fate rests in its hands in the final game of the 2024 AFL home-and-away season. The Dockers (12-9-1, 113.7%) began the round in ninth, but after Carlton fell in heartbreaking fashion to St Kilda earlier on Sunday, they are well and truly in the finals race — win and they’re in. The Power (15-7, 114.2%) were also watching their rivals on Sunday, with a GWS loss earlier in the day meaning they’ll finish second as long as they don’t lose by more than four goals. The match gets underway at 6:10pm AEST from Optus Stadium. Watch it live on Fox Footy (channel 504), streaming on Kayo and via Hubbl from 6pm AEST. Follow Fremantle v Port Adelaide in our live blog below! Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir is urging his players not to watch more football than normal this weekend as the Dockers pray for a bit of help from their AFL rivals.  In what is shaping up to be a blockbuster end to the home-and-away season, Fremantle need either Hawthorn, Carlton or the Western Bulldogs to lose to have any hope of reaching the finals. Hawthorn are hot favourites to defeat North Melbourne in Launceston on Saturday, but injury-hit Carlton face a tricky task against in-form St Kilda on Sunday, while the Bulldogs host a GWS outfit that is on a seven-match winning run. If at least one of those results goes Fremantle's way, then the Dockers can secure a finals berth by beating second-placed Port Adelaide at Optus Stadium on Sunday in what marks the last game of the regular season. Longmuir wants his players to put their full attention into beating Port rather than going out of their way to watch the games involving Hawthorn, Carlton and the Bulldogs.  “I talk to them about sticking to our process,” Longmuir told reporters on Thursday. “If their process is sitting down and watching the footy, keep doing it. But if it's not, don't get drawn into it. Whether we're alive in the season or not, we still want to go out there and put our best foot forward. That's been the message to the players.” The coach says he will address the finals equation pre-game only so that his players have got “clarity”. If Fremantle are still alive by the time their game starts, Longmuir won't be using the finals carrot as motivation during the match. “I'm not sure how much that actually helps players play better,” he said.  “Usually if we're not playing well or if we start to drift, those outcome-based thoughts aren't helping them play better. So giving them more - I'm not sure if that's a motivation in the game. Our players are intrinsically motivated anyway. They want to go out and play well.  It doesn't matter whether finals are on the line or not, they want to put their best foot forward and compete hard for four quarters.” Fremantle will again be without star forward Josh Treacy (knee), captain Alex Pearce (arm) and ruckman Sean Darcy (knee), but veteran Michael Walters (hamstring) is a strong chance to return after being named in the extended squad. Port lost Dan Houston to suspension but have been boosted by the return of forward Mitch Georgiades. The Dockers' inability to win close games has cost them dearly this season. Out of eight games decided by 13 points or less, the Dockers have posted six losses, one draw and one win. Their past three games have been heartbreaking losses to Essendon (one point), Geelong (11 points) and GWS (nine points). Fremantle must win their last match of the season against Port Adelaide if they are to make the finals. After previously being on the cusp of a top four berth, three narrow losses in a row has seen them slip into 10th, and they now must hope at least one of Hawthorn, Carlton and the Western Bulldogs lose. Port Adelaide will be looking to secure a top two finish and a home final, whilst also bouncing back from defeat in the Showdown. Sunday's game between Fremantle and Port Adelaide is scheduled to start at 4:10pm local time (6:10pm AEST) on August 25. The game will be played at Optus Stadium in Perth.  This match, and every match across the home-and-away season, will be available for live streaming and replay on Kayo Sports. Per bookmaker Sportsbet, Fremantle is the $1.84 favourite to win this match, while Port Adelaide is the underdog at $1.96. Port Adelaide won the two fixtures between the sides so far this season, in Round 1 by 39 points, and in Round 5 by 3 points. Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley is ignoring Fremantle's finals permutations ahead of Sunday's fixture in Perth. Hinkley says it's too dangerous to do otherwise ahead of the last match of the AFL's home-and-away season. Port will likely retain second spot with a win over the Dockers, who are relying on other results to fall their way to have a sniff of reaching the playoffs. By the time the teams run on to Optus Stadium, Freo - who enter the round in ninth spot just two premiership points shy of eighth spot - will know their fate. Fremantle need Hawthorn, Carlton or the Western Bulldogs to lose to have a chance of making the finals - which Hinkley says is irrelevant to Port. “We will prepare like we have every other week for this game, to make sure we bring our best and play our best available people to hopefully stay in really good form,” he said. “That’s all we’re going to focus on. I have been really strong on that with the whole group, and for everyone, that we stay in the moment. The moment is we’ve got to play Fremantle, a really good team, on their home deck.” Hinkley will also know by first bounce if the Power need a win to lock second spot and a home qualifying final. If GWS lose to the Western Bulldogs earlier Sunday, and Geelong fail to make up a large chunk of percentage by beating West Coast, the Power can’t be shifted from second. But the Port boss has shunned any temptation to rest players ahead of the finals. “We always plan for this week and this week alone,” he said. “And that’s what we’ll do because it just gets too dangerous to get anywhere ahead of that - don’t lose anything to do with momentum and form that we’re trying to get going.” Port will be without All Australian defender Dan Houston, whose five-game suspension for a bump that knocked out Adelaide’s Izak Rankine ends his season. And the Dockers again have ruled out Josh Treacy (knee) and Alex Pearce (arm).
