The RCMP has laid terrorism charges against a suspect from the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) after a “lengthy” investigation. The suspect, according to authorities, was allegedly participating in the activities of a listed terrorist group and counselling another person to commit a terrorism offence. The arrest came after an investigation that included collaboration with the Toronto Police Service, the Public Prosecution Service of Canada, the Ministry of the Attorney General, the Provincial Anti-Terrorist Section, and the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
The RCMP revealed that the alleged offences took place when the individual was a youth, and under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, they cannot be named. The individual is scheduled for a remote court appearance via video link on Aug. 27.
Growing Trend of Violent Extremism
The RCMP emphasized its concern about the “growing trend of violent extremism” and stressed that radicalization to violence is not limited to any particular background, culture, or religion. They highlighted the Canada Centre for Community Engagement and Prevention of Violence as the lead federal agency countering radicalization to violence, supporting programs aimed at preventing and intervening with individuals and groups at risk of radicalization.
A Reminder for Public Safety
The RCMP encourages anyone concerned that someone might be planning or considering acts of violence to reach out to their local police service. The force stated that “there are no known associated risks to the public” at this time.
Previous Terror Arrests in Toronto
This arrest comes weeks after a Toronto father and son were charged in an alleged plot to attack people with an axe and machete for ISIS. However, police did not link the two cases in their release.
Community Engagement
The RCMP's announcement reinforces the need for vigilance and community engagement in combating terrorism and extremism. The ongoing investigation highlights the importance of collaboration among law enforcement agencies at both the national and international levels.
Protecting Public Safety
The RCMP's commitment to safeguarding the public remains paramount. As the investigation progresses, the focus remains on protecting the community and addressing the root causes of violent extremism.
Moving Forward
The RCMP's proactive stance, coupled with the collaborative efforts of various agencies, serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining a safe and secure environment for Canadians. Continued vigilance and community engagement are vital in countering the threats of terrorism and extremism.
