Jadon Sancho's Manchester United nightmare is over after he joined Chelsea on a season-long loan with an obligation to buy. The agreement will see Sancho move to Stamford Bridge initially on loan before the 24-year-old joins permanently for £23million, depending on performance-related add-ons, next year. Sancho will replace Raheem Sterling, who has joined Arsenal, after the former Borussia Dortmund star was out-of-favour with head coach Erik ten Hag following a highly documented fall-out last season.

Sancho's Time at Manchester United

After impressive performances during his first spell at Borussia Dortmund saw him break into the England team, United paid £73m to bring Sancho to Old Trafford in the summer of 2021. However, under both Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ten Hag, the winger has failed to consistently replicate the performances that made him so vaunted before his move to the Premier League.

After a public falling out with the Dutchman saw him frozen out at United last season, Sancho returned to Dortmund on loan for the remainder of the 2023-24 campaign. Back in the Bundesliga the winger once again demonstrated his potential, making 21 appearances in all competitions as Edin Terzic's side reached the final of the Champions League. He had been welcomed back by Ten Hag after clearing the air with the United manager but was left out of the matchday squad for their opening two games of the Premier League season.

Why did Sancho leave Manchester United?

It's clear that Sancho wasn't in Ten Hag's plans for the future. The manager was looking to build a squad around players who he felt could contribute to his vision for the team. Despite the manager's public insistence that Sancho was still part of the squad, it was clear that the winger was not a key player in the team. His absence from the starting lineup for the opening two matches of the season only further reinforced this impression.

Why did Chelsea sign Sancho?

While Chelsea's need for a winger is clear, given the lack of impact from recent signings like Mykhailo Mudryk and Christopher Nkunku, it's still a surprise to see them bring in another player for this position, especially considering that they have already signed players like Joao Felix and Pedro Neto this summer. However, Sancho's potential is undeniable, and he is a player who could be a valuable asset for Chelsea. He is a versatile attacker who can play on either flank and is known for his speed and dribbling ability.

Sancho's Challenge at Chelsea

Despite the fact that Chelsea need a winger, Sancho faces a challenge. There are already a number of players competing for the same spot, including Cole Palmer, Angelo, and Noni Madueke, all of whom have shown flashes of brilliance. This means Sancho will need to work hard to earn his place in the starting lineup and show that he can be a consistent contributor for Chelsea.

Can Sancho Revive his Career at Chelsea?

It remains to be seen whether Sancho can revive his career at Chelsea. He will be looking to rediscover the form that made him one of the most exciting young players in the world. The move to Stamford Bridge represents a fresh start for the 24-year-old winger and a chance to prove that he still has what it takes to be a top player. He will be looking to make a statement in a new club, and with Chelsea's ambitions, he will have a good opportunity to show what he can do.

What's next for Sancho and Chelsea?

Chelsea's next Premier League game is against Crystal Palace on Sunday. However, Sancho’s deadline day move came too late for him to be included. It remains to be seen whether Sancho can make an immediate impact at Chelsea, but one thing is for sure: he will be looking to prove his doubters wrong and show that he is still a player with a lot to offer. This move is a gamble for both Chelsea and Sancho, and it will be interesting to see how it unfolds.

The End of a Chapter

Sancho's departure marks the end of a chapter for both Manchester United and the player himself. For United, it represents a failed gamble on a young talent. For Sancho, it signifies a chance to revive his career and prove that he can still be a top player. The future is uncertain, but one thing is for sure: the story of Jadon Sancho is far from over.
