One of Coventry City’s biggest Academy success stories returns to his home town club tonight and manager Mark Robins hopes that he gets a ‘lovely’ reception at the CBS Arena.

That player is, of course, James Maddison – a Cov Kid, born and bred in the area and who first made his name with the Sky Blues before setting off on a top level career that has seen him reach close to 200 Premier League appearances for Leicester City and Tottenham, and earn seven England caps to date.

The 27-year-old attacking midfielder, who graduated from the Sky Blues’ youth set up in 2013, going on to make 42 appearances for City before being sold to Norwich, remains a shining light for the Academy.

“There have been some brilliant players come through and James Maddison is up there with the best, if not the best in terms of where he is with his career,” said manager Mark Robins, speaking ahead of tonight’s Carabao Cup tie with Spurs.

“His personality is infectious, he loves playing football and he’s similar to Callum O’Hare with his character and effervescence, but he’s a top player. He finds space brilliantly, is a great technician and can score goals. He’s obviously made appearances for England now and hopefully will make more in the future. He’s a top player, there’s no doubt about it.

“When he was coming through here I always thought that he was a top player, and that was after I was here (first time around). Firstly with Steven Pressley and more latterly with Tony Mowbray, he came to the fore with the good squad they had in League One. It’s difficult to keep good players like that for any length of time, and everyone recognises the quality that he’s got.”

He added: “Whether he starts on Wednesday night, we’ll have to wait and see but, certainly, the type of players Tottenham have got they are good all over the pitch regardless of how they set up. The one things we know is they will be aggressive and trying to press, and we have to be ready for that.”

Coventry City boss Mark Robins believes that Tottenham Hotspur star James Maddison has an infectious personality and has hailed him as a great technician.

Tottenham signed Maddison from Leicester City in 2023 and the player has been a key part of Ange Postecoglou’s starting line-up.

Spurs are set to take on Coventry City in the EFL Cup third round on Tuesday and Maddison is set to return to the place where his career began.

Robins admitted that Maddison is one of the best players to come through Coventry academy and stated the Spurs star possesses a personality that is infectious to other players.

The Coventry boss stated that Maddison is good at finding spaces and hailed the Tottenham midfielder as an excellent tactician.

“There’s been some brilliant players come through the academy and James Maddison is right up there as one of the best and if not, the best”, Robins said at a press conference.

“Where he is now with his career and his personality is infectious and he loves playing football, he’s a top player.

“He finds space brilliantly, he is a great technician and he can score goals and he’s making appearances for England now and hopefully he can make more in the future.”

The Coventry boss is hopeful that Maddison will receive a warm welcome from the home crowd. “I think the supporters recognise that but that will be the furthest from my thoughts going into the game. I hope he gets a lovely reception but I then hope we go and perform to the best of our ability and have a really good evening.”

However, Robins is also aware of the challenge that awaits his team. “The one things we know is they will be aggressive and trying to press, and we have to be ready for that.”

The Sky Blues will need to be at their best to pull off an upset against a Tottenham side that is aiming to make a strong start to the season. Maddison’s return to the CBS Arena will be a special occasion for the Coventry fans, but it will be a tough test for the Sky Blues. It will be interesting to see how Maddison performs against his former club and whether he can help Tottenham to secure a victory.
